I am looking to upgrade my ASUS M2N-SLI. I have a phenom black edition quad AM2+ w/ 4gig 1066mem. I need suggestions for a SLI MBoard. I was looking at the ASUS 780a and 980a don't know which is better but the 980a I can plug in AM3 cpu and mem. Is there any other SLI chipsets I should look at. It seems its slim pickins for a AMD SLI setup. I also have a 9800gt and gtx260 already to run 3 monitors but I might pair up the gtx some day. I'm planning on upgrading for WIN7 64bit. I currently run XP. I also am thinking of getting a 150gig Raptor to run as my main then a 250 as the secondary. My budget is modest I guess I'm lookin around 170 for mobo and 170 for the raptor.

Well just found out that the 780a and 980a are the same chipset, but these came out back in Feb. Has there been no new SLI chipsets since then? Budget is open. Should I consider an AMD chipset? I'm not currently runnin SLI.

If i were you i'd just go am3. Upgrade path is way better. If budget is open, then you're set. You can get a gigabyte 770T-UD3P and a phenom II 720 black for less than $200 shipped. Just sell the other stuff on the forum here to help with the upgrade.

Only problem is, you have to get DDR3 memory, but again, you said budget is open.

If you want to stick with your am2 then the 780a is your only choice. It's a decent board. The reviews I've read put it on par with other AMD chipsets.

Well, Now I'm thinking the AMD route due to the eyefinity looking sweet. Then possibly doing crossfire. Does anyone have a preference between the 790FX or the 780G?

I went from an M2N-SLI to a 709FX-based board (M3A79-T Deluxe) earlier this year and couldn't be happier. It took a couple BIOS generations, but I can actually overclock my Phenom 9850 BE now...the M2N-SLI wouldn't let me get anywhere. Interestingly enough, the newest BIOS for this board lets you "unleash" capable dual- and triple-core PIIs - effectively restoring the disabled cores and giving you a quad-core.

I kept with DDR2 because I already had 4GB of it, but if your budget is open you may as well futureproof and get a DDR3-capable board.

Id have to say for am2+ board the asus m4a79 dlx has been a fine board...I also went am2+ for the mere fact i had 4 gigs of pretty good ddr2 ram and i usually upgrade every year to 18months..ill go ddr3 when the amd 890 ships come out next year..
this asus board i have now is rock solid stable and cool running..it takes all of the am3 cpu's out now and i figured ddr3 will have lower latencies and be cheaper as time goes on...really not much performance difference at all running ddr3 at this point...
some boards to look at would be the asus m4a78 dlx , m4a79t dlx[ddr3] the asus crossfire 3 ,and the msi gd70 as its cheaper and has had stellar reviews......

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Any thoughts on the GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790X ATX? Looks like a good board. Also looking at the ASUS M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX. Might be down to these 2.

GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P ---- These is a pretty good board. It unlocked the fourth core on a friends X3 720. You can't beat it's performance for the price.

Well I cant seem to decide which one, the asus or gigybyte. I'm leaning towards the asus, looks like more features but the gigybyte has better reviews. Oh I cant decide....

If you don't need the integrated graphic then I would go with Gigabyte. It has 16x+8x configuration for Crossfire, more PCI-E slots, more SATA ports and more USB ports at the back.

Anyone know if the Gigabyte board is 4+1 power or 8+2 power? Also how is the Sata Raid speeds/interface?

Been thinking about swapping out my Asus M3A78-T for this.
