Currently we have a small studio - we finished our garage and use it. It's only about 15x10 of space though, so things are cramped. Right now we use all hot lights - some tracklights on the ceiling and walls plus mobile ones for flexibility. Work fine once we white balance to them, but they're HOT.

We're thinking about buying some studio strobes, but we don't want to have them on tripod stands - we do lots of small kids, so stands and cables are a hazard not to mention the space issues.

I'd love to get some sort of arms to mount them from the ceiling - have them moveable for flexibility but still in the air. A heavier-duty version of this kind of arm, mounted from the ceiling, would be perfect.

Anyone know of something like this that'd handle a strobe with softbox, but not horribly expensive? Got a better idea?

How heavy is your strobe/softbox, and what do you consider to be expensive? How much movement are you wanting to have?

Not sure if this would help. But there is a company that makes lots of mounting brackets/arms. It is made more for vehicle use, but they might have something.

Have you considered using battery powered flash units? (Such as regular hotshoe mounted flashes?) Because those AC powered units like the Alien Bees & White Lightnings look heavy. And I'm sure they only get heavier as you move up the line of strobes...

Anyways, a good battery powered setup could be extremely portable, and with no weight wories (though you get somewhat less power & it still costs a fortune). You just need to figure out how to get them all to flash (would need to be manually set as E-TTL would probably freak out with a lot of flashes...that increases costs since the cheaper ones are fully auto). Might be some kind of hot-shoe cord or something...I really don't know.
