Im leaving for college soon in another city, most likley a crampt apartment about the size of a walk-in closet :p. Some of you may remember me, I had 4 speaker boxes, and 2 subwoofers.

Pair of boxen #1
2-12" Jensens in 1970s Pioneer HPM-60's box
2-4" 20W midrange
2-2" tweeter
2-Ribbon super-tweeter

Pair of boxen #2
2-10" Kenwood 1970s-ish woofers
(rest same as above)

then I had a few 8" subs, 3 amplifers, and 5 satellite speakers I picked up from somewhere. Ive spent a few years collecting all this, and probably have $100ish into it all. Its all nice and fine, except for the fact that each damn speaker box is about twice the size of my CRT monitor, and each amplifier is the size of my Computers case.

Im looking for a system, with 2 speakers that will set on my desk, and one subwoofer to go on the floor. Ive been googling and browsing through newegg and tiger-direct, and I cant find anything that I would like. My main complaint is a lack of mid-bass, you simply cant cover mid-bass with a small subwoofer and two 2.5" speakers. And I may possibly be deaf already, but I dont like to crank up a system to 3/4 volume to be able to hear it. My old system, I could turn it up 1/2 way, shut the door, and walk outside into the yard and still hear the music (muffled, but loud).

I may end up putting together something by buying seperate componets, but then again I would have to drag along a seperate amplifier or two... Anyone have any ideas on where/what I should be looking into? Or should I just give up, and give into a decent 5.1 setup?

I was in the same dilema....sort of, but I was recommended by many to get the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 setup. That's your best bet if you're sticking with 2.1's. I ended up getting the logitech z-5300e speakers because deep-down, I wanted surround sound. :p

if you can find them, get the altec lansing mx5021's (i actually have a pair im not using as i just upped to the klipsch PMU's). I was very happy with those, I just decided I wanted a 5.1 system. I am a sad puppy, spending money thsi way and that LOL.

Ditto here... The Klipsch ProMedias are great for smaller spaces....I've been using mine for 1+ year, and have zero complaints..

/ditto times 2...great!

I highly recommend Klipsch Promedia 2.1s as well. They are dead sexy and fit in a compact apartment. As far as I'm concerned good headphones and 2.1s for the computer. 5.1s for the home theater.

Ill get to googling and ebayin' on those. Thanks for the replies, I didnt want to lug around 300Lbs worth of 1970s amplifiers and speakers any more ;). I want a 2.1 setup just to follow the KISS rule, Id like a simple minimal setup that doesnt sound like ass. decent 5.1 systems seem to be easier to find, but I dont want to set up 5 satellite speakers and a subwoofer.
