Looking for small, quiet K8 cooler

I have been using an Aerocool GT-1000 on my 3400+ NewCastle for quite some time now. It does a great job, but it's also very large for my tastes (I hate huge heatsinks). I do not overclock. I still have the stock cooler, but my NewCastle gets up to 54-56 degrees celsius using it, and never tops 40 with the GT-1000.

I started to scour a bit and found a lot of people enjoying the stock AMD Heatpipe coolers. Sadly, all the decent deals I could find on them were on ebay and had ended.

I also would like it to be relatively silent, as my PC is very quiet right now and I really enjoy it. I want it to be rather small, also. No huge rockets, ninjas or xp's.

Are there any really popular solutions for my needs? I would preferr not to pay over $20-25 including shipping. I found one on newegg that has some good feedback:

Is this a waste? Is there a better option?

Thanks in advance.

That cooler has very positive reviews at NewEgg but take that with a grain of salt. ;) You may want to check out the Zalman 7000Cu or AlCu. It's relatively small and quiet.

I didn't think those were very small, but maybe I'm mistaken. At least in pictures of peoples' rigs they looked rather large.

Yeah, most of the reviewers at newegg aren't exactly [H]ardcore enthusiasts and most don't honestly know much. That's why I decided to get some feedback from some true-blue users from here.

The 7000AlCu specs: 136 x 136 x 67mm @ 438g

That's mid-range as far as size/mass go. It's definitely smaller than your GT-1000.

Get the Arctic Cooling Alpine 64, it's a budget cooler made for silence. It has a fluid bearing 92mm fan on a special mount so no vibrations can get through either. I think it's completely silent and it also cools better than stock by a lot. I used to load at 42C with 1.45V and 2.55GHz, now I load at 40C with 1.575V and 2.7GHz. I love this cooler and it's only $13. It IS a lot bigger than stock, but it's smaller than most other aftermarket cooler by a lot too.

Another excellent suggestion.

I was recommended that by another person also, I think I may go with it. The stock cooler is just too bad to efficiently cool the NewCastle to my liking.

It's a tad bigger than what I want, but I think it still fits my criteria. I do have a good amount of room in the case, I'm just a big minimalist and would like it to be simple and clean.

I also feel it's bad for the motherboard in general when I tote the PC to LAN parties. It must put a lot of stress on the mounting areas.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Probably wait until the weekend to sort this out -- kind of busy until then.

I received the Alpine64 and installed it today! Amazingly, my temperatures only rose 2-3 degrees celsius from the Aerocool GT-1000. To be honest I didn't like the GT-1000 at all. It was a hassle to install, took me an hour to uninstall and clean, and it obviously doesn't do that much better of a job than even this 12 dollar arctic Alpine64.

Sorry, it's at 1.55V doing 2.7GHz and loads at 42C.....if anyone still cares :D

I've got a 7000AlCu, it's small, quiet, and it's pure sex in every imaginable way.

That's in a masstige isn't it. I can tell because of the HD mounting rails below your CPU. I hate them, and removed them yesterday :D. So that alpine works well huh, it's cheap too, I guess I'll get it for my Gf's rig...
