Looking for silent kickass disk subsystem

Hi there!

With my Opteron 175 (at 2.4 GHz or more per core) and 4 GB of RAM I am quite happy with my system. At the moment I have two Seagate 7200.7 disks (one PATA and SATA each) in a RAID0 configuration holding all my data (yes, I do backups). Especially in the evening, when a lot of other students access this data, my disks can't handle the load. At about 35 MB/sec upload to several clients I can get no better rates and starting applications is not that amusing.

Now my question:
What upgrade is useful in my scenario and SILENT? The noise level of the two Seagates is OK, but (when seeking) not good. A more silent solution would be fine. Please don't suggest anything exceeding 400 Euro and/or giving less than 300 GB of storage.

PS: I have a small server in the basement (so it's noise is no problem) and gigabit in between. The problem here is that this server only is a Duron 1300 with 1 GB RAM.

Well, if you put a pair of Maxtor's Maxline III's in the Duron and a Samsung spinpoint in your machine, you should be fine and well under budget.

However, given that you've got many people accessing the disks (for what? database, file transfer, something else?) you might want to have a more server-oriented set of disks. Putting the disks in raid 1 will gain you a good deal of read speed, and not lose you write speed, but it'll cut the available disk space in half.

 
And how am I suppossed to use the Maxtors? The Duron cannot handle much more than 20 MB/sec under load (so disk seeking + network additional to the usual CPU stuff it does).
The students (not people, students! :) ) are mostly downloading porn. A server-oriented set of disks might be not the wrongest idea. I don't really think RAID1 would help me here.

not to sound stupid, but since you are in a multi-user scenario, it may really be a good idea to consider SCSI in this case. Considering your limited budget on the other hand, maybe you can find some SATA drives with a nice NCQ implementation, check out Storagereview's database, looking at the server benchmarks.

looking at those, with 32 concurrent I/Os is appears that the old 74G raptor is the drive of choice. However, it will be rather difficult to combine quiet + perfomance...
 
Yeah, SCSI has come to my mind earlier. Still quite expensive..I have to find someone with these Raptors to check the noise level.
