I am looking to upgrade after running an XP 2500+ on a Gigabyte GA-7VAX. I'm looking for future upgradability, while being able to use as many of my current components as possible (ATA133 hard drives, Radeon 9800 vid card, etc.) as at the VERY least, I'm going to be upgrading the CPU, motherboard, and memory all at once. The first CPU that jumps out at me on Newegg.com is the 3700+, as it's not too expensive at $233, so I'd probably be looking at a socket 939 board, unless I should be looking even futher ahead?
 
If you want to keep your video card and go s939 you will have to use a nforce3 mobo. It is still a good video card, but if you want to upgrade your motherboard, you might want to consider selling that card and upgrading. I got the biostar tforce 6100. It has some good overclocking results from other people. Its matx so it'll fit in an aspire qpack, which is a little sexy case. I went sff and never want to deal with a huge tower again.

Also, if your into overclocking there are some people who went for the socket 939 opteron. There seems to be a lot of potential and costs less for the same perfomace. There is the dual core version too.

Something else you might want to consider is keeping your memory, at least for now to save some cash, and upgrade later. The s939 mobos use the same memory as the socket A mobos. I dont know how much you have, but if you have at least 512mb and pc3200, you should be okay for a little. If money isn't a problem you might want to get a 1gb stick of ram.
 
Thanks, but I don't really bother with overclocking. I *am* planning to eventually get a PCI-X video card, probably a 6800, but I'd like to put that off if I can, just so I'm not shelling out $1000 all at once.
 
I would recomend doing it now, because later on you will have to upgrade your mobo again along with your video card. Obviosly you don't have to, and there is no real performance differences that I am aware of.
 
Yeah, I figured out how to search for both PCI-X & AGP, and there was 1 other board on Newegg, but it was also a no-name. Not worth the trouble. Oh well. Ok, if I drop the AGP requirement, what would be your recommendation then?
 
biostar tforce has been workin for me, but it is matx so it only has two pci slots, and one is blocked by by video card's heatsink.
The two other recomendations you will probably get are the asus a8n sli and the dfi lanparty sli. I think most nforce 4 boards should be okay if your not into sli. I would go for albatron if you don't mind missing some extras. I may be biased cause it was my last mobo. A lot of people also like epox and msi.
 
I'm not going to do SLI, too much $$ for not enough benefit. Nice in theory, but in my opinion diminishing returns starts in real fast with SLI.
