Here is one called Raptor . It's actually an older game so the graphics are just ok. I played it quite a while ago but back then it was a fairly fun game. It kept me and my boys entertained for a short while.

I remember when Raptor was first released. I bought the 3.5" floppy. The graphics were amazing at the time.

Still an OK game. Gameplay would still be good!

Does it have to be on the PC?

Arcade:
Anything Cave/Atlus (Guwange, ESP Ra De)
Anything Raizing
Anything Irem (R-Type etc.)
Nebulas Ray
Brave Blade
There are several nice NeoGeo ones too (Pulstar, Blazing Star, Andro Dunos, Last Resort, etc.)
Air Buster
Darius series
Raiden series
Gradius
Parodius
Earth Defence Force
Area 88
UN Squadron

Console:
Ikaruga
Star Soldier series
Whip Rush
Gaiares
Biohazard Battle
Thunderforce series
Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder
Sol Deace
Psychosis
Sinistron

Computers:
Katakis
Raptor
Project X
Apidya
Disposable Hero

There are thousands more, but these are good places to start. I suggest you pick up some old cartridges, download some emulators, etc. Do some searches on thesed titles and companies, and I'm sure you'll find plenty more.

For PC there is the older game "Crimson Skies" or Sky maybe. It was pretty fun.

That falls into my Cave/Atlus listing above :) Excellent game.

There are tons of other cool shooters that are fairly silly but fun, like Ordyne, Long Nosed Goblin, Twinbee, etc.

Nanostray for the DS is excellent. Highly recommended.

Don't forget about the old classics either. Choplifter, Defender, Cosmic Avenger, Scramble, Fort Apocalypse, Xevious, etc.

One of my favorites is Psychosis/Paranoia (depending on whether Japanese or US) for the TG16/PCEngine. Very cool and strange.

I also strongly disagree that Tyrian is the best ever. Cool for the time on the PC, but definitely not the best. Every Cave/Atlus shooter is better. All Raizing shooters are better. The later Raiden games? Etc. (at least if one were to ask me :D )

Find Ikaruga for the Dreamcast or Gamecube.

My fav of all time -

Twin Cobra - NES :)

Strikers 1945 (PSX)
Gradius III, IV, V (PS2)
Fire Shark (Genesis)
Gairies (Genesis)
The Raiden Project (PSX)
Darius Twin (SNES)
Dragon Power (NES)
Mars Matrix (DC)
Salamander (TG16, japanese 16-bit version of Life Force, on PCP.)

... There are more, and more... But those are the ones that come to mind immediately.

Mars Matrix is pretty friggin' crazy if you can find it and if you have a Dreamcast.

Guwange (arcade)
Mars Matrix (arcade/dreamcast)
Parodius series (arcade/various consoles)
Gradius series (various consoles)
Sol Divide (arcade, playstation)
Radiant Silvergun (all time favorite)
Ikaruga (Gamecube, Dreamcast, arcade)
Einhander (Playstation)
Espgaluda

okay, so anything by Cave, Arika, and Psikyo

On the PC, the ones I've been playing are Warning Forever, and I used to play Tubular World.

Would anyone seriously pay $15 for a game like Raptor these days? I don't get why they still try to charge that...

Einhander for psone (will work fine in a ps2) by squaresoft. its facking excellent.

Nice list! :) I forgot to list Radiant Silvergun.

I have a question, does anyone remember a top-down (I say this because you can rotate) shooter in the arcade, where you can rotate 360 (your ship stays centered and the background rotates around it?) I think you can raise and lower the ship on the Z-axis (to the screen, Y-axis for the ship if you were in it,) into and out of the scenery. I would have thought is was a Namco game, because the rotation engine for it looks like some of theirs (like the tank game that does this, Ordyne, etc.) It takes place in space (at least the levels I remember,) over space stations and other such space-type-stuff. I can't remember what the control setup looked like. I've looked through most of the Namco games from the late 80s to mid 90s, but didn't find anything like it. I'd like to figure out what it is, so I can find it.
