Looking for newer avi splitter and merger

Looking for newer avi splitter and merger that can also do x264 files and mkv files with not going overboard in editing options , seems VirtualDub is getting a bit outdated , and I have kept up with anything newer on that software side of things

VLC handles all those filetypes, and I think can trim & resize...but I don't know about merging.

That said, while not ideal, you could merge in VDub, and then transcode to something better in VLC...or there's always AfterEffects or that sort of thing [the "overkill" you mentioned ]
