Looking for new video card

I'm looking to buy a new video card for my rig. The 9700pro I have now has overheated so badly, that the connecter for the power has turned from white to brown... Yeah... so anyways I need a new card that will fit in an AGP8x slot and the heatsink shouldn't take up any more than one pci slot. I guess $300(us) would be the most I'll spend, but even that is pretty high. I'd prefer buying from newegg also.

as much as I want an x800 xt/xl I don't think I'm gonna be spending that much.
 
try to find a 6800 non ultra...

i suggest you try ebay and look up a BFG 6800 OC

as its an overclocked 6800 out of the box, has dual fans and a copper heat sink and heat pipes on it.

you can probably get one for about sub 200 to 215 at most.

i have one... it rips ass.
 
errrmmmm 200 bucks for a GT? No frys are near me though, they deliver anywhere in the states though, right?
 
The one in the link is the NU (non ultra or gt). It has 12pipes vs. 16 on the GT, but people seem to have good success unlocking the extra ones. I've never ordered from Outpost, but I'm sure they ship anywhere in the US.
 
I'm not planning on overclocking. Just want something good enough to run all the latest games (hl2, doom3 and other new FPSs.) The 9700 pro ran all those games good but lately the thing just locks up and crashes the whole system. Not only that but the thing can't handle linux! I got like 1 fps in the game with the tanks.
 
need to be more specific with your requirements.

1. how long do you plan on keeping the card?
2. what resolution do you play games at?
3. what level of AA and what level of AF would you like to use?

ok.. here it is..

a 6600 GT will beat a 9800....and its going to play all your games very good.

a 6800 non ultra (like that bfg 6800 oc) is better than the 6600 gt b/c it has more pipelines , thus more room to send data.

That card , given you have a decent processor, should last you a while .. say 1.5 years if we are being realistic.

if you want some more power get a 6800GT as its got 16 pipes as opposed to the 6800non ultras 12 pipelines. it also has 6 vertex shaders,, which is a type of co processor, as opposed to 5 on the non ultra.

of course you do stand an ok chance of unlocking your 6800 non ultra to get the extra 4 pipes and 1 vertex shader.

i tried.. didnt work.

o well.

but yea.. thats it.

if you could list your processor type and speed and how much ram you have .. that would help.

but really a 6800 non ultra sounds right up your ally.

cheaper than the 6800Gt , yet VERY powerful.... a good mix between a 6600gt and a 6800gt.

and by the way im on the clock at work. LOL

I have had the 9700 pro for over 3 years.. so 2 years at the LEAST. As long as it runs the games I'll be fine, I don't need to run doom3 at ULTRA high settings. I mainly play Hl2 and hl1 mods.
2. what resolution do you play games at?
1280x1024.. something like that. It's a 19 inch old crt monitor that I use.
3. what level of AA and what level of AF would you like to use?
Not sure, I think I had those both at like 8x with the 9700 pro. something higher with a new card though.
The rest of my pc's specs are in the sig. The problem with my comp is that when I bought it I bought too much useless pci cards (modem, which I've never touched, a game controller input, and firewire which I've never touched)

I probably could sacrifice a second PCI slot btw, If it's really worth it.


BTW, if I do get a 6800 regular, what manufacturer should I get?

you really should go for the x800 xl. the 6800 non ultra will struggle to do 1280x1024 with aa and af, let alone in two years from now, the x800 xl should be able to do that.
 
Is the x800 xl better or worse than the xt? I'm guessing it's in between the x800 pro and the xt.. Is the 6800 gt worse than the xl?

6800 non ultra
x800 pro
x800 xl
6800 gt (marginly better)
x800 xt

thats the order. x800 xl and 6800 gt flip flop performance wise in certain games. but the x800 xl has price performance ratio over the 6800 gt.
 
well at least now you cant say a 6600gt is the way to go for a 200$ budget.. a 6800nu > 6600gt at that pricepoint.
 
You could also think of this this way: spend $200 now and by the 6800NU, then, 1.5-2 years from now, spend another $200 on whatever next generation card is at that price point. Might give you better performance overall then spending $350-$400 now...

example of how thats not a good idea:

someone buys a 9800 pro 2 years ago, cost = 400
somoeone today buys a 6600GT, cost = 200

the guy who bought the 9800 pro got more for his money the card lasted longer.

What about the guy who spent $200 on a ti4200 2 years ago, and buys a 6800NU for $200 today? Over a 4 year span, I'd say that guy is better off. It really depends on what your budget is. If you can afford to get the latest and greatest today, then go for it. But if not, it might be better to spread your budget out over a few years.

my point was that the more you spend now the longer it will be before you need to buy a new card
