Hello,

I am looking for a new headset. My current pair is a 5 year old Plantronics Gamecom that is finally starting to show some issues. At low volumes the left side seems to have the audio cut out, so it is probably time to replace it. My range is around $60-80. I do not have a sound card and run off of my USB sound card that came with my Gamecom, and don't want to buy a discrete sound card.

Some of my preferences:

- Volume controller on the cord, not on the headset/ear muffs.

- Doesn't require a bunch of background software to work. Plug and play is preferable.

- Has the cloth ear muff covers opposed to the smooth ones.

- Good build quality. Want this to last me another ~5 years.


Those aren't required aside from the first one, but all preferred. I've been eying the Corsair H1500 which is on sale for $40, but heard the software/drivers can be a pain:

Also been looking at Steelseries offerings but there are so many variations I am not sure which one I should be looking at. Can the Siberia series be adjusted for head size? Doesn't look like it can?

I am also aware that separate headphones/mics are much better when it comes to quality for the price but for now I would prefer a single headset.

Any other suggestions?

I recommend the HyperX Cloud 2 but their price is closer to $100.

If you don't need a USB headset, the original HyperX Cloud is excellent.

[EDIT] If you've already got the USB sound card, then I'd get the original Cloud X headset ($67 on Amazon).

+1 that recommendation also. The Cloud Headset is one of the best headsets you can get in its price range, and even a level above. If you already have a USB dongle that's good, this headset benefits from having a 600 ohms jack. The HyperX branding of the set is for Gaming, but it is a great all-around set.

Mic is average, and bonus is listening to music and movies sound great too. Comes with both cloth and leatherette ear pieces. This is a closed ear set with practically NO noise leakage using the leatherette ear pieces and a bit with the cloth.
 
I would save up a few more $$ and get the sennheiser game one. Its open back with velour pads which let's your ear breath very well. Very comfortable compare to my Astro A50 plus it sounds way better. The mic is also pretty good. There's a few review on the mic on YouTube you can check out.

My abnormally shaped head has destroyed about half a dozen headsets in the last few years. Some of them very expensive.

I finally settled myself on a pair of the Steel Series Siberia Elites. Had them for over a year now with nary a problem. They're a bit heavy, and a little warm. But they're fricking DURABLE.
 
What is the major difference between the Hyper X Cloud and Cloud 2? Pictures and specs look similar, but the price difference is over $30. Is the Cloud 2 considerably better?

I tend to stretch headsets, which puts stress on all the seams in multi-part plastic/whatever headsets.
Eventually the seams just pop apart and it breaks at the junction between the ear cup and the headband. It's happened with cheap $40 headsets and very un-cheap $200 headsets.

On a couple, I've even tried being proactive and epoxying the seams. The things still come apart eventually.
