Looking for low end speaker replacement

I don't really care about sound quality so long as it passes a pretty low bar. I currently have some ancient Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 speakers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Sound_System_80) and the quality is fine for me. The problem is that the volume buttons don't work anymore and when the volume is low, the speakers turn off which is super annoying (presumably it's to preserve power or some such).

So I am looking for something to replace these with. I have a budget of $100-$150. I currently swap my speakers for my headset on my Astro Mixamp, so something using the 3.5mm jack there would be ideal.

Advice? Most of the recommendations I have seen have been for higher end setups which I am not really interested in.

I did see a recommendation for These in one thread. Any opinions on these or other, better, options?
 
used reciever and speakers from craigslist ftw

I'm currently using a reciever, pioneer sub, monoprice 8" speakers and loving it.

op look at this guide to clean the various controls on stereo equip you may well find that your current speakers can be coaxed to work in a acceptable manner with little expense / minimal effort.

i think those monoprice monitors would probable suite your needs.


I love a used stereo gear set up as much (MORE...lol...much more than some of yous) and OP if you have /// MAKE room it can be very good sound...and full of awesome sauce... but maybe it isn't your thing based on you post.


I think a decent t-amp (topping TP-20MKII comes to mind ~$70 and decent bookshelf speakers

used speakers / amps /receivers can be a very compelling value (see my threads about low priced audio gear I drag home all the dang time.)

4" drivers and usually I would agree with that assessment. But they play remarkably flat down to almost 50hz

pair with a cheapie sub down the line when you feel like upgrading they are a win, better than those swans.
 
I was referring to the monoprice monitors not the pioneers.

The pioneers are fine too but the swans are a simpler plug and play. Can't go wrong either way.
