At my univeristy my boss and I came up with an idea to build a small cluster center similar to what our Virginia Tech does, but much much smaller, and more "fun"...

We've planned out that we are going to be building a SSI cluster, using OpenMOSIX, with PXE to boot the nodes running on Superstack 3300 XM 10/100 switches. Now my problem is getting enough computers with consistant hardware to join the cluster. We had a bunch of computers laying around ranging from Dell GX260's to IBM GL300's but the IBM's refuse to boot over PXE (They hang when looking for TFTP server) and the Dell's, well we only have one GX260. We also have a few old Dell Laptop's that boot perfectly over the network, and are currently the only nodes on the network. 3 nodes total...hardely a cluster lol.

For OpenMOSIX to work, all the nodes need to be running the same kernel, which is why netboot came into play. The head box is a GX260 with Fedora Core 1 installed with a OpenMosix kernel.

I'm looking for suggestions on where to get lots of computers with consistaint hardware, or a more efficient use of those old computers...any suggestions? Electricity is not a problem, we're running this out of a server closet. Cost is somewhat a problem, but basically anything under $1000 for a nice lot of computers should be OK. Any ideas where to look?

Yes....

They have a lot of multi lots and often the systems are identical or similar.

Just beware that most (none should) Government computers have no HDD when they are resold.

Ebay also has a few deals too, just gotta look...

...any relation to Moose of the same first name?

Yeah looked on eBay, usually a bit more expensive too, with $1000 I can only get GX220's.

No relation. Didn't know AtomicMoose existed until today when I was poking through the DC forums looking for tips.

Thanks for the sites, i'll have a poke around!

I saw a lot of P4 dells but they had no ram or hard drives. No hard drives, I can deal with (PXE boot). No ram? Thats at least 40.00 per pc. Sigh.

Another lot of P3 gateways, 20 of them... Saw a lot of 24 1kW audio amplifiers. Damn you for posting that link. I need a new amplifier, and Ive been looking for more boxen. Now I wont get to sleep tonight. Pretty soon ill want a humvee and some more crap that I never knew I needed.

No reason for them not to have memory, so there will be lots with memory. Just chalk it up to IT guys harvesting it before they turn the gear in to DRMO. Lots will show up with memory.

Good luck.
