Looking for great speakers (compact)

I need a kick-ass set of speakers preferably self-amplified like the m-audio types (although I would like to find another brand, something smaller maybe). Looking for either a 2.0 or 2.1 setup.

Will be connecting to them from a laptop with HDMI output (may have to bypass the signal through my monitor) to get L/R RCA outputs. no matter

There is a SPDIF coax connector on the HP dock designed from my laptop.

I have available SPDIF/coax, HDMI (with audio) and then the standard 1/8" headphone outputs on laptop.

Also have a slot they claim is a "PC Card Slots 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)" could be used as a soundcard.

laptop is hp dv7-3085dx.

Giant magnets are overrated

(granted one of these probably costs more than the pair of speakers you're looking to buy)
