From personal experience, I find comfy headhpones to have the soft ear pads, such as the velour. Also, I find open headphones let my ears breath better, so they don't heat up as much. I also find that around the ear ear pads work best.

If you allow me to break your bank, May I recommend you save up a bit more and consider the HD555 from sennhesier? Most people who have commented on their sound quality say they like it very much. Can be had new for ~118$. For a headphone that you will keep for years to come, it's a good price, especially conaisering audio equipment in general and the sound quality you get out of it.

As always, check your local audio shops to see if they have any headphones on display that you can try on and listen to. See how they sound and feel.
If you find it hard to find a local retailer, headphone.com is a place that lists short reviews on most of their headphones. I'm personally thinking about purchasing a Beyerdynamic DT231 from them. Fairly cheap, but still has the soft velour ear pads and is closed for portable use.

~Hope this helps, and keep us posted

I've tried most senn's and after spending some time at sam ash and a local audiophile shop, I chose the AKG K240's. $99 and they sound incredible. Semi closed cup, can play VERY loud, nice frequency (great bass) and solid construction. Cheap and nice.

Do you find them as comfortable as comparable headphones with velour instead of the leather / fake leather ear pads?

I looked at AKG headphones, but wasn't impressed with their comfort (rest on ear with the leather, closed....).

thx towert7 for the advice. the hd555 looks like a great headphone. Where can i get them for $118. i've been looking around and all i see them for is 150.

The best $99 pair of headphones I'd say is probably the HD280's for isolation, or HD555's if you want open, canalphones? Shures e2c.
