fear is pretty fun but it's almost 1 shot one kill, it someone comes around a corner and fires first they win.
 
For "popular and fun" I think it's a good choice to pick BF2 - it's well established, it's pretty much stable now after all the damned patching, good variety of loadouts (they nerfed the classes for 2142). BF2142 is pretty much just a total conversion of BF2, they retooled the same engine for a sci-fi setting, and they made almost EVERYTHING an unlockable in BF2142 which you have to earn thru online play.

And the POE2 mod for BF2 is pretty slick too. Try and find the combo pack of BF2 and Special Forces for around $30, you'll have a decent range of weapons to try out and tons of servers available.

i already got DOD S and i love it so far the graphics are awwesome and the game speed feels right and it has real tatics to it
 
Make sure to download the high resolution pack. It makes DODS looks soooo much better. Plus, it also modifies your HUD (so it doesn't take up so much space) and adds more realistic sound to the guns.

Battlefield 2 is what I'm playing right now. I have 2142, but everyone I know who has it still plays BF2. It's just much more solid (in our opinions), and has a better feel.

doesn't look much diffrent than what the game looks like now on my8800GTS and 24 lcd
 
The screenshots don't do it justice at all. Just download and install the mods and you should be able to tell the difference quite easily.
