So lately my burner on my laptop has produced more duds than workings discs so I think it's more or less fried and in need of a replacement. I get the most trouble with dual layer discs but even regular cds give me grief. Does anyone know a good external dual layer burner I could get sub $40? Dual layer functionality is a huge factor to me.

Laptop size drive are typically very bad burners. So a full size drive in an external enclosure will probably be your best bet. Something like:

Sony Optiarc Ad-7230 $19.99

and

5.25" enclosure $24.99

So $44.98 + Shipping if using Bing Cashback within the next 4 days you can knock about 15% off so about $38.23 + shipping would be your total!
This would be my suggestion, but you can always hit up the MyCE forums http://club.myce.com/ for some info on other drives.
