It's was sad to see my 9800gx2 couldn't handle the ultra high res texture pack mods for Oblivion. To that add some new cities design, weather effects and sounds I can barely move the cursor on screen. Which card would you recommend? If you're still playing the game with the mods which card are you using?

I'll be playing it on 1920x1080 with Opty 280 , 4gb, raid0 and win7 64.

btw does eyefiniti works on the Oblivion?

i suggest you upgrade your CPU

Exactly. That old Opteron is holding back your 9800 GX2, not the other way around. The majority of those mods you mentioned are script intensive, not texture heavy (in other words, your CPU is getting the workout).

I definitely agree with the new CPU needed. Not new GFX.

Thank you all for your input...guess i need a new cpu, mobo and memory set...=(
What's the popular budget oriented setup? Core I7 , I5 or amd's new 6core?

But the 9800GX2 is a very large part of the problem, because it only has 512MB RAM. I used to modify Oblivion the way the OP has, using the original QTP3 (Qarl's Texture Pack 3), Open Cities and Almost Everything Visible When Distant, and have seen texture memory usage well in excess of 1GB, which made my old 8800GTX 768MB choke.

What may help a lot and still have a lot of eyecandy is to use QTP3 Redimized, or QTP3 Reduced. See the World Textures page of TOTO.

You can easily get a readout of texture memory usage in Oblivion by using page 13 of the tdt console command.

The Opteron 280 is not so bad. Oblivion is an old gamebyro engine, its not optimzed for multi cores, it still runs on single core doesn't it?

With my old X2 3800+ @ 2.6GHz and an 8800GT, Oblivion ran perfectly fine for me with Qarl's texture pack.

I'm not sure what is causing yours to be so slow. If you are using the cities mods, it would help to get a faster card with more videomemory though.

In terms of price AMD 6 core (1050T), i5, then i7. Though the price difference isn't all that great anymore since i5 and i7 mobos can be found for relatively cheaper prices now.

A 1050T is (AM2+ or AM3) ~ 199
A 1090T is (AM2+ or AM3) ~ 299
An i5 750 is (socket 1156) ~ 199
An i7 860 (socket 1156) ~ 269
An i7 930 (socket 1366) ~ 299

The only advantage the AMD cpus have is 2 extra cores, but not a lot of games can even fully harness that power so it doesn't seem like you get much benefit from them in terms of gaming performance.

Check out the review and benches at Tom's and see for yourself.

In the same vein, the gaming benchmarks are a reminder that the latest and greatest graphics cards really do need a capable processor behind them if you want to unleash their potential. An overclockable CPU like the Core i7-920 or -930 can really open up a Radeon HD 5870 or GeForce GTX 480 when you get it up to the 4 GHz range. Dipping down to 3.2 GHz doesn’t really help the 1090T win any battles in the games (Call of Duty excepted, where Turbo CORE seems to improve performance
over the X4 965). If you’re a gamer, save the money you’d spend on a six-core CPU, buy your favorite overclockable processor, and spend the difference on graphics or an SSD to cut level load times.

You need at least a 1GB card if you're going to use the best texture packs. And I strongly disagree with people who say a 9800GX2 is enough. A maxed out heavily modded oblivion with ini tweaks to up the settings more than the sliders allow, SSAO, sunshafts, etc pushes my GTX 480 sli really hard and it also pushed my 5870+5970 trifire as well.

Not that you won't need a new cpu, but it doesn't have to be that great. Anything the equivalent of a E8400 @ 3.6 or better is fine for just about any mods you wanna throw on it. If you put a lot of crap in like FCOM, better cities, and physics for all furniture ect, in cities you will actually be RAM limited which means there's very little you can do about it since even the fastest RAM isn't nearly fast enough to make up for the archaic coding. Definitely don't skimp on RAM speed if you want to use tons of mods...it could be the difference between 12 fps and 18 fps in the worst areas.

You won't be able to have the best expirience if you don't fork down the dollars. I recommend upgrading the CPU if you want to have large viewing distances, and the video card for higher res textures. If you have a sli compatible mobo, grab another 9800GX2.

I do have the asus a8n32 sli mobo but I'm really doubting putting another 9800gx2 would make much difference since the total amount the quad uses actually going to be limited to 512mb.
