The onboard sound on my asus mobo sucks under xp. In vista, I was impressed, however, in XP, it has a lot of noise, so I disabled it, and used an old usb audigy with the standard xp drivers.

I'd like to get something a little better. I am looking for somethign that can do 5.1/7.1 surround sound, and something I can use the advanced audio settings in most games.

I haven't had an add-in sound card since my old audigy 2 back in the day.

I remember the creative drivers where rather bloated.

What are todays options?

I also plan on buying the turtle beach 5.1 headset to go with it.

the only option to use all the audio features in modern games in an x-fi. do NOT get the extremeudio as its a software codec only. get an extremegamer, extrememusic, or fatailty

also u would be better off with good quality headphones instead of the 5.1 jobs- the xfi does great surround sound effects with normal headphones

use the Daniel_K A2zs drivers, which I using now which working great. He also modded ALchemy to work with the Audigy/2zs which I also using. I dont have any problems with it or the modded drivers.

I'm Able to use my A2zs normally in vista til my pre-order comes. I know it works because I using it on my Audigy2zs right now. You dont need to buy a XFI now. Unless you just want to.

http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=25012 For the Daniel_K modded Audigy2 ZS drivers,Also the same drivers that has the 4gb ram fix

the link for Alchemy modded for the Audigy2zs is here http://files.filefront.com/Alchemy+Universal+10004rar/;8371783;/fileinfo.html

Then you will be all set

I'll try these with my USB audigy and see how it goes. If it works decent and does decent surround effects with the headphones I got, maybe I'l just opt for better headphones.
I didn't see any type of a compatibility chart for these drivers, I know my external audigy is hella old.

Well I tried to install the drivers, the one says its not a valid win32 app, the other says its not for my version of windows, and tells me to upgrade to vista.

I was googling and came upon a site that hosts the orig. creative install cd's, so I am going to see what I can get out of this usb card.

I'd rather have a sound hardware solution though.
