Looking for FX5800 Ultra

I'm looking to get a new video card and I have fallen in love with the specs and reviews of the Nvidia fx5800 Ultra... You just can't beat 1GHz memory speed :)

With my luck I have probably been looking in all the wrong places, but I cannot find any for sale... Pricewatch, pricegrabber, newegg, best buy, compusa, fry's, e-bay, etc.

Anyone know a good place (retail store or online) that has them?

Ummmm I am pretty sure you can... Try a 5900.

If I am not mistaken, don't those OC to over 1GHz?

But that is beside the point. 1GHz doesn't mean anything. Just because someones car has 999,999hp doesn't mean his 3 inch wheels and balding tires can actually use it.

Don't waste your money on something as silly as numbers.

GHz aren't everything

I guess a FX5800 would be nice to have in the same sense that it'd be nice to have a Delorian

yea, but ya gotta go like 5 miles to hit that speed...

Um these cards were that bad even Nvidia trys to hide the fact that they ever existed lmao:p They may have looked good on paper like most of nvidias newer cards but they performed like shit=not worth the money;)

i still have my BFG 5800 Ultra ..i consider it fun more than anything .. bad ideas yes ...interesting concept yup... needless to say it was a ballsy move period one that should remind video card companys to not be scared to try a new and possibly bad outcome .. remember nvidia learned alot of what not to do from this one card and sometimes you have to get shot to remember there is pain ...name any other video card maker that learned such a quick lesson in a one card series .. also i think its funny as hell it speeds up when playing 3D game

fixed.

The 5800 Ultra was rare and it quickly turned into a weird collector's item (many sold on ebay for $100-$200 more than list). The companies that offered these filled the pre-orders and few were available beyond that. FXFlow was noisy, the GPU ran hot, performance was meh and it was based on very expensive and limited quantity (at the time) memory.

Crimson Knight: Why? The regular 5900 is close to the same speed despite the lower GPU and memory speeds, is much more overclockable and is cheaper. A 5900 non-ultra at 500/980 (pretty easy after flashing with a 5950 BIOS) kills a 5800 Ultra, even overclocked.

*sigh*

Yeah you guys are correct... I did not think about the 128 bit either... & I have heard that the 5900 are easy to oc...

Well I can't argue with two pages of replies over 18 hrs saying not to get it :)

I think I'll look into a FX 5900, they are cheaper too...

Flashing the BIOS to a 5950 is a good idea! Any special tricks I need to know to do that if I get one?

Thanx

No tricks really, just download a 5950 Ultra BIOS, nvflash 4.41 and you're set. Before flashing, test out overclocking first. You might not even want to flash it if it overclocks very well.

I flashed to a 5950U BIOS at first and got 510/980, but it's not much faster overall than 480/980 I have it at now with the default BIOS. The 5950U BIOS uses slower memory timings than the 5900 non-ultra BIOS.

The 5900 is superior in other ways besides the memory bus and smaller cooler.
The worthless FX12 shader units were replaced with more worthwhile FP16 units on the NV35.

Given the rather middling shader performance of the 5900 series, I'd suggest not paying more for worse performance ;)

You'll pry my 5800 Ultra from my cold, dead hands. It's really a great card despite what people say.

That being said, the 5950 Ultra supersedes it.

Ummmm i know you said it doesn't have the leafblower fan on it but the one on there is realllllly loud i mean wow loud, i have one in stock where i work if you wanna buy it its yours for 275cdn :)

No leaf blower = not a 5800 ultra. You just have a regular 5800.

RMA it. Maybe they'll replace it with a 5900.
