I'm looking for some good quality 2.0 speakers to replace my old pc speakers. Trying to keep it under $150AU. So far my first choice so far are the M-Audio AV30s, but I've read a few reviews about how they stop working after a year or so. Could be that these people just didn't break them in properly.

Mainly, I'm looking for something with full sound and range, compact enough to fit on my desk comfortably and nothing aesthetically gaudy.

For that price there is only one set of speakers I know that may be anywhere remotely good: Pioneer SP-BS22-LR
 
craigslist or wherever you have a used marketplace. For your budget, you will not get much new.

Oh so you want powered speakers also for pocket change? LOL! Go shop for Logitech. They have plastic cups with a string just for that purpose.

The Pioneer website claims the price is 165AUD by the way.
 
if you have any musical instrument stores nearby they probably have a number of studio monitor speakers on offer... (most of which are probably going to be over budget) but worth a look.. and often times these places (in America at least) have some used gear that people have traded in on new speakers which you might find some bargins going that route...

studio monitors are not really designed for casual listening so it would be best to give them a listen first and see if you like the sound.


my other thought is to look about for used stereo speakers ... i have done quite well finding some rather nice speakers for very small money 2nd hand. if you can find something nice then you could pair them with a T-amp or other small desktop Class D amp... if you can afford it say a SMSL SA-60 with the TPA3116 chip would be nice.

if you have the desk / room space you could also look for 2nd hand stereo amps / receivers

TBH, studio monitors are (mostly) just speakers that strive for accuracy and detail. Nothing more. There are personal preferences on what good sound is, though.
