I've got a dinosaur at the moment (my pc is old), and I'm looking for alternatives to Counterstrike 1.6. I've got a small team of three who are all pretty burnt out on CS1.6, and we're looking for something similar to CS but better (more gameplay modes, strategy having more of an effect on gameplay etc etc).

Also, I'm looking for something that's the equivalent to Red Faction II on the PS2 (and don't say RFII for PC, because it doesn't even have multiplayer). If anyone has any suggestions, that would be awesome!

My Dinosaur:
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.20GHZ no OC)
NFII Ultra Infinity (Socket A)
Radeon 9600XT (AGP)

The original Ghost Recon and 2 expansions.
Battlefield 2
Joint operations

I think you should give COD4:Modern Warfare (or the soon-to-be-released successor "Modern Warfare 2") a whirl. As an old 1.6 player myself (terrible, but I did make it up to cal-im once...) I'd say thats probably what your looking for.

That said I'm completely addicted to TF2 and L4D. I picked up the orange box for the sole purpose of HL2 ep 2 and portal and was pleasently suprised by TF2. I just logged my 400th hour a few weeks ago. Great game.

How well any of those games run on your dinosaur I dont know, but i've got a similar rig; Athlon XP 2.3GHz, 1GB DDR 400, Geforce 6600GT (up from a 9600 SE), and It did episode 1 alright. I think its fair to infer from that, that it will do TF2, donno about COD4.

That said what you can build a PC for these days is pretty astonishing. If everyone hadn't run out of money in october the HD4800s and GTX series would all be starting at over $350. As it stands, at $130, the HD4850 and at $100 the HD4770/4830 are absolutely excellent buys. The GTS250, at over $150, not so much. You can get a very nice gaming rig for under $800 after shipping/tax/new OS.

I don't think COD 4 would run on his computer at all.

I'm assuming your graphics card is the original 9600's?

As in what cane before the x800's?

Or I could be completely wrong.

If your a competitive gamer (fair assumption from still playing 1.6?) you'll probably only really enjoy 1.6, CSS, & Quake. I hear TF2 has some really good competition but I can't speak from experience.

COD4 on the other hand...no.

Try Call of Duty or Call of Duty 2.

Call of Duty 4, TF2, and BF2 will run extremely poorly with a 9600XT (trust me, I had the card).

I had a radeon 9200 se (so not too far behind your card) until i finally upgraded a month ago. I played battlefield vietnam, it wasnt competitive at all, but that's what made it fun imo.

The card played any source game exceptionally well for how old it was, so give L4D and TF2 a try.

TF2 sounds like it would be the best match for you and your buds, and I don't think you'll have FPS problems with it. If you try CoD4, you don't need a new computer to play it either.

Also, go to http://bashandslash.com/ and use one of the tweaked .ini files. You can go from 52 FPS to 199 as shown on this page: http://bashandslash.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=320&Itemid=74 Yitch 3 is the one most commonly used.

Search-and-Destroy is very good while the Death-match is very poor.

Give NEOTOKYO a chance. It is sort of tactical, and free. Played it last night for the first time, and had a blast.

I think Call of duty 4 would run on your setup at medium mixed high settings. Afterall COD4 is using a modified version of 2's engine. Give it a try. I would borrow the disk from a friend and try it out before you buy it though.

cod 4 DOES work quite well on low end gpu's. tried it with a 6200 agp -800x600 maxed out textures and got around 40 fps. You should be able to find a few fps configs(yitch2,yitch3) and get much better results.

COD4 should run great on there, and it sounds like it might be a game you enjoy.

^This. Especially the last part.

cod4 bashers, thats new.

anyways, if you want gameplay like cs 1.6, as in strategy/teamwork then cod4/css is your game.

tf2? its not even remotely similar to cs1.6 people.

the largest difference from 1.6 to cod4 is the weapon dmg/accuracy.

playing on a HC server = dead in 1-2 shots on avg. pretty much every weapon is usable to hit people long range while firing slow.

You need 4 people to field a L4D team...

I played CS 1.6 for years and I can say that L4D is easily my favorite multilayer game of all time. Buy it.

cod4 bashers, thats new.

For good reason too. I would not consider a game competitive or justify putting it in the same league as Counter-Strike when you can get a huge advantage (better weapons) the longer you play (leveling up) .

If you want to play competitively than CoD4 really isn't the best game. There isn't a single fps out there that can touch CS (1.6 and Source) for team based competitive play.

If you just wanna pub and make some calls and work with a few buddies than CoD4 would be perfect.

TF2 is fun but it really takes some teamwork.

This is a free Q3 TC that was originally developed about 8 years ago and is still going relatively strong. Kind of a mix of CS and Quake gameplay. I used to play it a lot, I'd say it's worth a try on an old system considering that it is now totally free and standalone.

Shadowrun has a CS feel since you walk at a slower pace and the guns and crosshairs are somewhat identical.

Not too sure how well his computer will do TF2. It's a giant CPU whore.

Cs 1.6 is godlike but I went to Cod4 for the longest time. Got bored of it since it got repetative and easy.

Umm best alternative for 1.6 is 1.5 ;) mwa haha Silent awp :D

NeoTokyo is where its at right now. the maps are simply amazing and the game is quite polished for being just released unlike AA3

Try out Soldier Of Fortune 2. It's still got a decent multiplayer following for a game that's 8 years old. I play it several times a week still. Your rig will handle it fine.

seems every gaming discussion these days turns into poor arguments about why one's favorite game is better than anothers favorite game.

Anyways COD4 single player was possibly the best narrative gaming experiance I've ever had. The end of that game nearly brought me to tears, and I like the fact that it challenges a fair share of cliches. I think its always been pretty obvious that "no man gets left behind" usually gets everybody killed, but the way this game presented that fact was beautiful. Its worth buying it just for the single player.

That said, if your playing CS 1.6 your probably not too intrested in single player games. I would agree with the above, that L4D is a good game, as its definatly alot of fun if you can get 3 other people in vent, but its a far cry from 1.6 gameplay (unless of course you got addicted to the zombie mod or liked to get a couple people together and go against 30 bots).

I never got into amateur COD4 scrims but I always thought they existed, I coulda sworn they existed...
[edit]if they don't whats #cod4scrim for?
