Hey guys,

Hoping you video card guru's can help me here. I am building a computer for a friend of mine, and one of the primary things he needs is a video card that can do video capture. For the most part he needs to be able to hook it up to his VCR so he can capture what is on there. Generally I am assuming an ATI All In Wonder or something of that nature, but I'm not really sure since I have never purchased / worked with a card like this. Care to help a [H] brotha out?

Don't do an All-In-Wonder.

What you want to find is a card with VIVO (video-in/video-out). Those cards take RCA input and outputs.

Problem with an AIW card is that it adds a LOT of cost for a capability he probably doesn't need (TV Tuner).

If he's got a VCR (and, by your post, I assume he does), then he already HAS a TV tuner! He doesn't need to spend another $150-$200 to get one on his graphics card, too!

I don't know what his gaming needs are, but I just bought a 5900XT with VIVO for $185 - a fair site cheaper than any of ATI's current AIW offerings, and faster than their older ones.

That may also be more card than he needs, just do a search on Newegg for 'VIVO', and you'll get a ton of good candidates.

EDIT: Be wary of refurbs. On many cards - especially nVidia-based ones - a special adapter is required to plug the A/V source into the card. IE., the RCA adapter is on a standalone dongle rather than on the card bracket. Refurbs are not guaranteed to include all peripherals, so that all-important part may be missing.

Thank you for the informatino dderidex, I will start searching. Does anyone else have any input? :)

It should. And that's the newer flip-chip version of the 5600 Ultra, so it shouldn't suck as bad. Almost 5700-level performance.

On the back of your VCR (or DVD or whatever), you'll find three color-coded RCA plugs. The yellow is for video, and that's what you plug into your graphics card's video-in. The red and white are L- and R- channel audio. You'll need to get those to your soundcard.

A lot of soundcards come with L- and R- audio RCA jacks on them in breakout boxes and drive bays and the like (Creative Platinum cards, Hercules GameTheater, etc), but most don't.

For them, you need to get one of these adapters*. This takes 2 RCA-outputs and converts them to a single 1/8" jack input. You plug this into the line coming from the red and white RCA outputs of the VCR and the other end into your line-in on your soundcard. You can use your mic-in if you don't have a line-in, but expect the record quality to suffer as a result.

*At least, I think that's the one you want. Better to talk with someone from Radio Shack, they'll point out the right adapter to you.

I was looking for a VIVO card and passed on that one because it looks like it will create alot of cable clutter. I decided on this Asus 5200 mostly because of the dual DVI ports but I found something even better. I was also looking at TV Tuners because I really hate my VCR and noticed that Newegg has the E-Home Wonders and this one has composite in for only $79 (free shipping). I think I might have to get one just to try it but it atleast saves a few dollars and it's a dedicated card which I'm sure would help him out with video capturing. This way you can get a good all around video card like a 9600Pro.

that one is close...
that splits one 1/8 headphone to 2 1/4 headphones.

You can buy a 1/8 to RCA cable, about 8-10 bucks, or the adaptor alone for about $4.

I've got both, the actual cable has a smaller end where it plugs into the computer, it fits better, doesn't get in the way on systems with more accessories.
