I'm looking into getting some new headphones mainly for exercising, traveling, and to listen around the dorm when my roommate's around. At first I was looking into the HD497's, but I think the open style won't be too good for when I'm traveling or in my room, when I don't want outside noise coming in and I don't want sound leaking out. What are the best closed style headphones I could get for a <$50-70 pricetag? And would a closed headphone in this pricerange have the same quality I could get with the 497s? I've mainly been looking at the HD212-pro and PX 200s (liking the compact style of the 200s), are any of these worthwhile? Thanks for any info.
 
It depends on how loud you listen to your music.

My 497's are hardly noticeable from outside the set at a decent volume. Unless you listen to them at ear-piercing levels, no one will notice them.

I dont hear anything from the outside really, either. I've had people screaming to get my attention, knocking on doors, calling on the phone, and I've missed the noise completely.

The 497's aren't bad. They actually are just about the same as some other closed sets that I've had.
 
I'm definitely not a fan of the "its not loud enough if my ears aren't bleeding" volume levels, so I guess that's another point for the 497s. Have you ever used them on a plane trip though? I'm worried that the loud ambient noise will force me to crank them loud enough so other people nearby might get bothered by it.
 
I own a set of PX200s and they are pretty decent highly portable cans for the price (after puchasing these my 4 year old Koss porta pro's found their way into the trash)
Be warned though.... most of the people that have tried mine have not been able to get a good fit with them and they tend to sound like crap when that happens. :)

The 497's barely isolate (if at all). The people next to you on the plan could probably hear what you are listening but I doubt it would spread farther than that.

Only if you're a bass-head on a budget. But for listeners like me, the HD212Pro simply delivers too much bass for my tastes.
