looking for audio recoding program

i want to transfer some stuff off my tape recorder onto the pc using by hooking a wire from the "headphones" to "microphone/line in" jack. ive already tried this using window's "sound recorder" program but it sux and i cant record more than 1 min. Does anyone know a free program that can do it and save as mp3 or wav format?

Audacity is open-source, and does EVERYTHING. It's all dependant on source, but using Audacity eliminates software as a possible cause of low-quality recordings.

This I'm not sure of. You probably can to a certain degree, but I wouldn't know how, and it's also dependant on the source.
