Looking for an RPG

I am looking for a recent (within the past couple years) RPG that offers a large selection of different items to be able to loot. (Sorta like WoW) It would need to be single player so no MMOs. I would also prefer that its either third person or dynamic camera. I already have Oblivion and its expansions, but there really wasn't much in the way of variety of items. Neverwinter Nights 2 was alright. I was considering Hellgate London but I have heard some horror stories about that game.

Any ideas?

The Witcher!

Very fun game.. but lots of items to loot, no. You have 3-4 good swords.. 2 sets of armor.

Although a really super fun RPG game.. but more story and fighting than anything to do with items.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

I guess this one didn't actually read the post.

It sounds like you are looking for a loot game more than an actual RPG. So, i guess I'll take a different direction and recommend Titan Quest. Hellgate is also not a bad choice on the loot end, but the story is non-existent and gets a bit repetitive. Silverfall might also be an option, but i have never played it so I can't recommend it. The reviews are mostly negative, but some say patches have made it a bit better.

How about Titan's Quest? Also, have you tried the original Neverwinter Nights and the expansion packs for it? They were excellent games.

Hellgate London has also been greatly improved since it's release and is a good game too.

The Witcher is definitely a good one, Titan Quest is good too, I'm currently playing that. Level 8 ftw! :p

I think most folks are going to tell you "The Witcher" is your best bet for a quality RPG, granted you don't have lots of items to loot.

Other worthy RPG's

Gothic 3
Titan Quest
Two Worlds
SpellForce 2

Titan Quest is an awesome game for single-player loot whores, not to mention just a great game in its own right.

The Witcher was great and it would be a shame to miss it. Gothic 3 was ok after patches and Two Worlds just kinda weird. Titan Quest is fun.

Gothic 3 (with the patches, yes) didn't do much for me, far less than oblivion did, thats for sure. And Oblivion also didn't do much for me. I loved the Dark Brotherhood quests and a fwe others, the rest was kinda meh.

I've been hooked on Hellgate:London since it came out and it's improved a great deal. If you want a game to get better items and keep upgrading/updating your character, look no further. Yes, the storyline is thin and yes, it does get repetitive. If you love going in and beating on stuff to get more and better loot though, this game rules... :D

Diablo.

The game never ages for me.:D

As for third person camera...uh...

Guild Wars?

Not a lot of amazing RPG's like the one you want around these days.

I generally hate Diablo and it's clones, but for some reason I just couldn't stop playing Titan Quest. I actually played the game and it's expansion all the way through multiple times using almost every possible combination of skills. If you haven't played it, I would pick it over Hellgate.

I just got Stalker off Steam and going to start getting into that game. I believe its counted as one of those RPG/FPS just like Mass Effect is.

Another vote for Titan Quest, it's a great hack and slash lootfest. There's also some older games like Sacred that are similar, though not as pretty. Two Worlds is, as someone else mentioned, wierd. It's like Oblivion with tweaks to make it more action and loot oriented. I picked it up cheap (for the Xbox 360) and am having fun so far.

I believe he was looking for an RPG with lots of loot. I vote for Neverwinter Nights 1, not NWN 2. NWN 2 had the least loot as possible of any RPG game I ever played.

Although NWN 1 was good, he is looking for an RPG game that came out within the past couple years. NWN 1 came out almost 6 years ago.

UGH, Stalker is not a RPG. The RPG genre has been abused over the years and it seems any game that can implement some sort of leveling system gets the RPG tag slapped on. Mass Effect is also not a FPS. FPS is another acronym that is commonly mis-used when discussing a game where shooting is involved.

Naw... Its not like he's the only one. I guess it kind of a pet peeve for me. When I see a genre mis-used or mis-represented, its the equivalent to scraching a chalk board to me.

I do agree STALKER is not a real RPG but it does have quite a few RPG elements and there is a lot of looting in this game. It is almost exactly what the original poster is looking for except you do not have experience points and character stats.

You have a huge world to explore and you can do what ever you want.
It has an inventory system to store ammunition, cures, food, and quest items. You have to make sure you do not carry too much otherwise you will drain stamina. You can make friends in the game and team up or make enemies. There are main quest and side quest to gain money or equipment. There are eight different endings in the game depending how you react to certain situations. The list goes on. If I had to classify the game I would call it a RPG/FPS but not a straight up RPG.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Now to free up some cash...

So far I am thinking Titan Quest and Hellgate. Hellgate is playable SP with no active internet right?

Maybe its the Old-Skool RP'er in me, but I think it would be more accurate to say that Stalker is a FPS with a few features commonly found in RPGs. ;)

+1 for Titan Quest and its expansion, Immortal Throne. I just started IT and its quite good. TQ is basically Diablo 2 with Greek mythology as the content. The graphics are beautiful.

The Witcher!

I'm going to recommend the Witcher. Hellgate London is only fun for a few weeks. Or at least that is how it is for me and most of everyone I spoke to.

To say the witcher is lacking on content means that you haven't experimented much with the game. There are some very nice weapons that can be used in conjuction with the swords to create some pretty nice moves. Not to mention you can go the magic route and ignore the melee all together. Or, maybe a little of both. And don't forget it has a tons of mods with a lot more on the way.

I liked the witcher. Kinda cool and you can really take your time in the game. Plus the fighting style and interaction is a little different. You really feal like your getting tough without looking fake.

Also, the level up bonuses are different too...a lot to choose from.

one other think, the game has demons and possessions and things of this nature if your comfortable with it. Some of the scenes are a little uncanny IMO. But I am a little sensitive to that kinda thing.:)
