Hey all,
I already posted this in the cooling and overclocking sections, but nobody replied, so here goes again...

I have an Asus K8N-DL, recently purchased, working fairly well except for one thing: the northbridge fan is horribly loud and whiney, especially when the onboard smart fan control kicks in and it throttles down a notch or two. I want to replace this thing ASAP, which normally wouldn't be a problem, except that the northbridge is in line with the PCI-E x16 slot for my graphics card. Here's a pic of what I mean:
http://usa.asus.com/products/server...dl/k8n-dl_l.jpg

I need something short to cool this thing because my 6600GT runs right over the fan. Pretty much any PCI-E video card will run over it. The tallest the cooler I can put on it is about 14mm.

If possible, I want one that is low RPM and pretty quiet but still moves 8-10CFM or so. I did a few hours research and saw the old Themaltake Orange Orb, said to be good back a few years ago and I was getting ready to buy it, but it's so old no one sells it any more. I also found someone mentioning they put a Vantec Iceberq4 on one with slight modification. This is also a VGA card cooler and I don't know if it would be sufficient to cool the beast that is NF4.

Any help? This thing is annoying the hell out of me!

Thanks

try this on for size and just bend the HS fins to the sides. i did that on my asus board and it works GREAT. the iceberg was suggested for the radeon 9800pro 256mb if u wanted to Upgrade it to the XL version. so i think it can cool NF4 chipset.... :p
I didn't think of bending the fins... that is tempting.

I'm gonna measure and make sure it should fit even if I do bend when I get home tonight, but I think I would get the Vantec one here: http://www.svc.com/zanoco.html if I went fanless.
This is looking very good... Thanks!

Why don't you just contact ASUS RMA.
a few weeks back I contacted them to replace my A8N NF4 Fan because it started to get loud (as they all get; Defective) and they sent me a new one, better one too. FREE!!!

The A8NSLI-Premium has a heatpipe for the NB chipset. Maybe, if you're lucky, it'll work for you, and Asus can sell you one.

the NEWST an8 has the heatpipe thing, the older AN8 SLI doesnt. the CM HS or what ever you chose is best bent when its not attached to the board, since you have a much higher mobility around the board and it wont swivel in its place like it did when i installed it on my board and started bending the fins.

Here's a suggestion: If you get a fanless NB heatsink, you can add a fan on the side of the heatsink, instead of on top of it.

if u get the HS that i suggested or a similar 1 you wont need a fan on it. ive been running my pc solid for the past 3 days and nothing happened.

Not a bad idea, but the stock ones are loud and whiney anyways, and I'm trying to get this thing as quiet as I can. My room mate for this coming year has made it clear he doesn't appreciate loud fans at night :p

I'm gonna check out the heatpipe cooler today, see what I can find out. Didn't know they had such a thing. But I'm leaning towards just the Zalman fanless sink and bending the fins. The fan hole I just cut in to the side should blow right on top of the NB too.

Thanks guys for your help. I'll let you know what I choose!

i have a similar problem with my nf4 cooler on the A8N-E. its the loudest thing in my case! and once in a while, it makes a high pich noise. how effective is the heatsink cooler from compusa? also, how do you remove the current heatsink since its has a spring and is hooked to the other side of the mobo, would i have to take my mobo out?

the hS from compusa is awesome. ya, you have to take the mobo off, that would be the easyest way to get that done. otherwise you have to cut the spring offs, and if you ever have problems with the board and you wanna RMA, your gonn have a problem. To remove it, unmount the mobo get a pair of pliars and squeeze the little heads on the bottom so they fit through the hole and thats it. just buy that HS get some artic silver also from CompUSSR apply some of the paste onthe chipset. then stick the new heatsink in.

Heres a thread I started a while back about Asus RMA for the fan noise problem.

Awesome dude! Just called them too, was on hold for a couple minutes and got a lady who had a slight accent, so I only missed a couple words ;) I guess the fan for my board isn't in stock because it probably isn't the most popular board of theirs, so she said it would be ordered, shipped to them, and then reshipped to me, taking about 2 weeks. Fine with me, a free HSF for me to compare to the fanless Zalman I ordered the other night! Thanks for the info.

did they make all the arangments for you on the phone? i told them my phone number and model number and email and they said they would get back to me later

Yeah, I said I recently purchased a board and the fan is making a lot of noise. The lady just asked the model and said OK, we'll send you one. No charge, no hastle, no questions. All she needed was my address.
