Looking for advice for new sound setup

Ive just finished building a new athlon64 rig and I am contemplating redoing my sound setup. Currently I have an soundblaster extigy hooked in to promedia 5.1s. I have constantly had problems with these speakers because I am in the military and live in the barracks, so I keep having to move around constantly and its getting to be a pain having to rewire them and take up so much space in a tiny ass room. Also theres the frequent run-ins with military police due to noise disturbances  But I listen to lots of music, so I still want something that sounds great and puts out enough sound to be immersive, but from a 2.1 setup. Also, I am debating using onboard sound cuz the external sound card is a hassle now that I have a full tower as opposed to my SFF. Would I notice a difference using 2.1s? All I listen to is mp3s anyway and those arent the greatest sound quality. Ive been reading cnet looking for info, but they place way too much emphasis on how cool something looks so I dont trust them. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you dont need surround (which it sounds like you dont)-

I reccomend an M-Audio audiophile 2496. You can run whatever 2.1 or 2.0 system you want through that and your music will sound great.
