My PSU is quite noisy, so I want to exchange its fans. But I'm completely new to modding a PSU and would like to read a tutorial on this topic. Does anybody know of a nice one?

Unless you have a lot of experience working on electronic components, opening up your power supply is a bad idea. The capacitors inside a power supply hold enough charge to kill a healthy person instantly if you don't know what you're doing.

Wait for others that have many years of experience on how to decharge your PSU, to tell you how to do so. After you have it opened up, check the size on the fan (in MM), then replace with the same size of fan.

-This will void your warantee
-What PSU do you have?

Turn on the computer with psu attached. Pull the plug from the power supply. remove power supply from case. Ground yourself. Open it up. Remove said crappy fan, put in the one you want, and splice the wires accordingly: Black>>black, red >> red.

To discharge the caps:

Un-plug PSU from wall

Press the "power on" button several times

Remove PSU from PC

Short all non-black leads either to a black lead (ground) or to the PSU case

All caps "should" now be discharged.

For added saftey after removing the PSU case you can "short across the top" of large caps using an insulated screw driver.

Make sure you install the fan facing the right direction!

After replacing your fan & reassembling the PSU, check for direct shorts using an ohm meter set on 1X.

Good Luck,
Dave
