I just bought a new laptop (Acer 5520), and I would like to get it to run LOTRO a bit better. I'm not looking for blazing fast awesome graphics, but as it is right now, the game is unplayable.

According to www.srtest.com, this computer should run the game just fine, and if I give it a bit more RAM it will meet the 'recommended' requirements.

Basically I'm looking for suggestions of stuff I can tweak to try and get some more performance out of it.

Please let me know if you have any constructive suggestions.

You want 2GB minimum if you're gonna be using Vista. 4GB should be doable at todays dirt cheap RAM prices.

Also, like someone else said, we need your video card info, That's the most important spec when it comes to how LOTRO is gonna run. Of course, if its bad, there's nothing you can do about it.

Thats what google brings up for your model...if thats right you are probably SOL man. $500 budget laptops aren't made for gaming...period. Not to mention you are running Vista with 1GB RAM...even if you upgrade your RAM your video card still isn't made for gaming, and there is nothing you can do about that.

If you want to game you are looking at spending $1500-2000 for starters for a gaming laptop.
 
Max out the amount of RAM your laptop can handle, then see where you're at with LOTRO. If it's still not good enough for you, then follow koretex's suggestion.

isn't gonna get you much in the way of graphics.. It'll make flash games look awesome!
 
Change the thread to looking for a new laptop. You gonna need at least a 2600 ati or 7600 Nvidia to play that and not alot of eye candy with those. gateway makes a fairly cheap lappy with a 8800m video card. For the money seems like a great deal. Think around 1300. But saw some on the buy and sell forums around 900. That will get you where you want to be.
 
I don't think bashing you for buying a budget laptop is the way to go. Most of these people think it is funny I guess.

They are correct though, don't expect to max settings out on laptops. Even the really expensive ones are going to be slower than top of the line desktops.

The best way to go would be to get really fast ram, and you will probably need at least 2 gigs. Laptop DIMMs are more expensive, but I am sure you can still game with the 7000M videocard you have, just turn down the resolution, or the shadows and textures.

I had a blast on my geforce 6150. Company of Heroes didn't look pretty, or run particularly well, but I still had fun!

Next time you get a computer, consider the applications you want to use and get a laptop or desktop. You can easily game on a $600 desktop. Once you get an geforce 8800 or better, you will really get to enjoy the eye candy.
 
well hope the bashing part wasnt meant toward me cause my post was nothing like that. Only want to help and you never know how much the person understands about graphics. Some people really want to see faces on the mobs. i know if i turn everything to low on EQ2 it is ugly but great framerates. Got a friend that plays eq2 on a 9200 radeon and he didnt know that u could see spell effects. I like the eye candy.

The OP asked for upgrade advice, and he got information saying that his computer was crap. I admit, it probably won't play the newest games out there, but why can't people just give an answer to his question instead of telling him he made a bad decision?

Not that it matters, but it is just a matter of principal now. You are making accusations towards people in this thread yet not quoting anyone. I just reread this small thread and found no evidence of anyone "bashing" the OP or telling the OP his laptop was "crap" so please quote someone if you are going to start throwing stones...I mean you are the one that suggested the OP buy a desktop to play games when he is talking about a laptop :rolleyes:
 
In my original post I said I'm not looking for anything amazing. I agree that it doesn't have enough memory, and that's my first stop for getting more performance out of it.

On another note, I have to call BS on the idea that you have to spend $2000 to get a laptop worth gaming on. This laptop was intended to replace a HP CD7000A that is having AC adapter issues (Original one died, HP has sent me the wrong one to replace it 3 times).

The HP isn't fabulous by today's standards, but it runs most of my games just fine.

You have to keep in mind that most people here are enthusiasts and that gaming with anything less than a 22" widescreen would be considered "low-end" to them.

I have a 19" widescreen which I use to play my games with at 1440x900, at times I do feel intimidated by some posters and their fancy 1900x1200 resolutions, but just remember that most people here really go balls to the wall or pretty damn close to it to maximize their gaming experience.

By no means should you have to raise your standards to match theirs; if it works for you and you feel comfortable with it, then your goal has been accomplished.

Exactly what he said! I have a $2000 Asus laptop for gaming and I consider it just mediocre for gaming on the go. If I had the cash to throw away on it I would have a $7000 Sager laptop for gaming :D
 
I just found out that all of the drivers I need are available for XP Pro for this notebook, so all I need to do is download them, install XP, and sneakernet the drivers to the notebook.

I do appreciate all of your help. I think I will be just fine with what I've got, once the 4gb of ram arrives from Newegg.
