I need to archive a whole bunch of our old Word documents. Currently, they're each several megabytes, but condense well (sub 300k) when converted to PDF. We never need to edit these documents again, we just need to have them available as a reference source.

We're currently using CutePDF (with the GNU Ghostscript backend) as our PDF Printer of choice, but it's too clunky and time-consuming to do each of our several hundred documents individually.

Ideally, I'd like a tool that will recurse through all of the directories and convert the .DOC files to .PDF in place.

I Googled and found several commercial offerings, but they're fairly expensive. I also found a Visual Basic script, but it is dependent upon the official Acrobat Distiller.

Does anyone know of any GNU (free as in beer) tools that will do this for us?

thanks in advance!

finally found what I was looking for. It was a shareware app called MS Word to Adobe PDF Batch Creator Multi Document". It's from circa 2001, so it was kinda weird to get it to play nice on XP and it nagged for payment, but it worked just fine.
