... similar to Civ 5 in complexity, but doesn't take weeks to finish. My boss and I will often play for a couple hours after work, but sometimes, due to work schedules, we won't play for a good month. This makes our normal Civ 5 games last WAAAY too long, and we never really finish one before we forget wtf our strategy was to begin with.

TLDR;
Need Civ 5 like game that doesn't take weeks to complete

I've recently tried an interesting strategy game. It's called Eador: Masters of the Broken World, and even though it has some rough edges, it has been a pleasant experience so far. It combines several strategy games in one, map tiles from civ, battles from hom3 etc... Give it a shot.

I tried this out yesterday as well. From my experience, Eador generally plays as a more complex version of Heroes of Might and Magic. I enjoyed the time I spent playing it, but I was somewhat disappointed by the substantial increase in difficulty between the tutorial and starting the first shard. Dozens of buildings, units, and spells are overwhelmingly dumped on the player without introduction and even on the lower difficulty settings I find most engagements difficult. I love games that pose a challenge, and maybe I'm just too noob to understand some key concepts, but I feel the tutorial isn't adequately preparing players for the game.

Warlock Master of the Arcane. More combat focused than Civ but good game and more streamlined.

Great game! Are you referring to this one here? Fun game, but dated to windows 98.

Oh yeah... Hope you aren't talking tabletop, because I've had LONG weekends playing a single game of that.

Have you looked at Battle for Wesnoth? It is free, open source, and multiplayer.

The best way I can think to describe it would be a single Homm3 battle but on a larger hex map.

There is no resource gathering map vs. battle map, it is just one map. There is no resource gathering other than keeping your flag on a town for a turn, which would be the equivalent of having a gold mine on a Homm3 battle map (if that makes sense).

Well it is the same game as the broad game version, only it's digital. I used to have it laying around here somewhere. If I find it, I'll see if I can get it to load/work on Windows 7.

However, it's much faster than the traditional broad game for a couple reasons.

1. No need to worry about setting up the pieces/board, adding/removing, count dice, etc... it's all done digitally and much faster.
2. Different rules than the traditional rules, makes for quicker games. I'm talking games that last 2 - 3 hours vs 8+ hours on the traditional broad game.

Now to go track down my copy. :eek:

Well I found the game, installed it and started playing.

Few things I've noticed that I am looking into;

1. The buttons on the bottom of the screen do not show up correctly. These buttons are important because they allow you to advance to the next phase, turn or round when whatever is going on is completed. The game is still playable, you just have to take a guess at what button you need to hit that's invisible on the bottom. I played a long round until...

2. Seems their is some kind of log file size limit that I reached towards the end of the game. Once that happens, the game broadcasted an error and I was unable to do anything. I had to use the task manager to close the game.

Seems their is hope as patches are available for the game; I found this.

Going to try it out again later, I was literally playing since about 5 minutes after I made that last post until just now. Didn't take long to find my disc. So I've been playing ~2 hours. The game could be shorter though, I was doing all my researches at the beginning, you can disable all that, and turn on fast dice rolling and other things to help speed up the game in the options if you wish.

He's conned me into getting SC2. We'll see how that plays (ha!) out.

Have you tried the Total War series? There are plenty of titles to choose from many different wars. The game is solid in terms of gameplay and I don't recall the campaigns taking forever to complete. Although challenging, you can go through the campaigns relatively quickly.
