One of my friends complains of noise coming from his computer and wants it as QUIET as possible. He has 1 80mm exhaust fan and 1 CPU fan. The pc is on for a few hrs a day( 5 -6) So i was thinking of a HUGE heatsink maybe and then some sort of Thermaltake 80mm adjustable speed fan for the exhaust? Or maybe one of the Zalman 7000 for CPU cooling?
 
Need abit more information.
What cpu is your friend using? (AMD? Intel? Northwood? Prescott? what speed?)
What's his current heatsink/fan? (stock?)
Does he overclock his system? What's the house temp like?
 
I would go with Zalman. I used the CNPS-7000alcu in the past and I'm currently using the CNPS-7700alcu and I can't even hear it (when the fan is at the lowest setting) over my Panaflo 80MM L1A case fans.
 
I don't know what kind of heat it has to handle but...

thermalright xp120 + nexus silent 120mm = you won't hear anything

If you need more cfm, check out Silenx 120mms....kind of pricey but I think they're good.

After he replaces the hsf and exhaust he'll probably start to hear the PSU and HDs... :p
 
i sold him my old PC which i bought from ABS. here are the system specs. the PSU has been replaced with a 300W antec, the audigy has been transfered into my current PC.

i find watercooling to be by far the best option (if the added $$ doesn't bug you). My own setup uses a dangerden block with eheim 1250, which makes less noise than the interference on my speakers, just a low frequency sound when isolated properly. I use a large rubbermaid tub for a resevoir that fits under my desk (probably holds 20+ gallons), and no radiator. It has always worked fine for me, then again the load was only an XP1700+@1.8ghz. The PSU uses an 80mm panaflo (imo best quiet/cfm ratio fans) @ 7v. It doesn't make much noise at all, though, I'm sure a 80-120mm hsf setup @ 7v would be pretty quiet also, but not as quiet, and certainly not equivalent to watercooling performance. Another thing that is important is isolating vibrations in the case, neoprene or similar rubber between drive screws and mountings can help, making sure all the 5 1/4 bays have panels over them, I even had one project where I insulated the whole case with sound dampening material (cheap material, the stuff you buy by the yard to put under carpets, looks like mixed up rubber/foam with a mesh holding it all together) obviously I didn't care about the heat, as the case didn't transfer heat nearly as well after that. Also I find that when watching a movie (when I like it silent) it can help to simply drape a sweatshirt or some heavy clothing over the dvd drive bay (the loudest pc noise when I watch a movie). It not all be pretty, but it can be practical. Also most of the pioneer drives have a speed utility for the drive that you can grab, I find it nice for movies as well.

Set the CPU divider down as low as it will go. See if you can get the processor down to 400MHz or so. It should now be safe to take the fan off of the heat sink. Then, see how slow you can get the memory going.

Next, remove the video card, and get him an old Voodoo 3 or something else passively cooled. And with such low power consumption, you might even be able to remove the fan from the power supply. Instant silent computer...

I am assuming that he doen't need a lot of performance :D

i thought of that idea last night, lol. well he bought that pc from me because his pentium 3 wasnt cutting it anymore lol.
