looking for a replacement for my 9800xt

Well my 9800xt is no longer with us. So I'm looking to replace it, was thinking of just getting another 9800xt but the 6600gt caught my eye. I would like to know if the 6600gt would be better then my old 9800xt, or if a 9800xt would do better.

Also if anyone could recommend one about $200 and agp, I would give you my children.:eek:
 
go with the 6600GT. its alot better. besides, it has Shader 3.0 which the ATI's dont have. I say you should go with that one.
 
if you can get a BFG 6800nu for 200$ go for it..

otherwise go with the 6600gt but i suggest saving some money for 6800gt as it will last longer.
 
Yea I was kinda thinging of saving up some money and going with a 6800 or maby even a x800pro. But now that my 9800 is I am using a ati 9000pro. and that's not very good for hl2.

I was just confused by some of the prices. 9800xt for 250 or so, and a 6600gt for under 200. that didn't make me want the 6600gt.
 
Well the 6600GT will be a little faster than your 9800XT. Probably still even at HL2. If not for other games it will be.

The X800Pro is a good card, but not as fast or as well featured as the 6800GT. Keep in mind that you can OC the 6800GT's to Ultra speeds easily.

So I would recommend saving up for the 6800GT. If not, I'd get a 6600GT before I'd get another 9800XT.

My 9800xt ran hl2 pritty good. So I would think the pro would do pritty good as well.
 
You can find used 6800GT's for around $300 or so. I have one for sale for $310 shipped.

I would suggest saving and getting a 6800GT or an AGP x800xl, especially if you plan to play at higher resolutions like 1600x1200.
 
I also agree with the 6800GT response. i would go for that as well, just a bit $$$ more but its worth it.
 
i recommend the 6600gt also.

do you plan on fedexing your children to me? because i here fedex messes up packages

You do realise, by the time SM3.0 is utilized in any extent by any game, the games will be to advanced for a 6600GT to handle with playable framerates at any settings to take advantage of sm3.0

At the moment, sm3.0 is useless

But yes, the 6600GT would be right around your pricepoint.

QFT.

Until there is a mainstream game w/ an actual solid ship date...SM3.0 is a "fluff" feature.

Also the 6600 GT tends to overclock at least 5% pretty easily. Seems quite a few people are seeing 10%. I like the card. It gives me good performance at 1280x1024 w/ about 2x/4x AA (40 FPS+). If I turn off AA/AF I can get 60+ easily. The only real limitation of the 6600GT is the reduced bandwidth.

Finally the 6800NU costs about $50 more than the 6600GT. However it does beat the 6600GT by about 5-10%. With AA/AF on it pulls a bit further ahead (another 5-10%). If you are one of the lucky the pipes may unlock and you can go to a 16/5 or 16/6 card which makes a nice bang for the buck.

The 6800GT at $350+ price tag is the next real step but there are quite a few people now consider ATI's new middle of the ground line at $300 barrier. So in order of choice it would be

6600GT--6800NU--X800PRO/XL--6800GT.

Equivalent boost in performance for $$$ spent. Just dont' get a 9800XT again..not worth the pennies any more.

Also, it should look something like this:

6600GT>6800NU>6800GT>X800XL (Since an XL is cheaper, with about the same performance)>6800Ultra/X800XT(X850XT/PE)
 
My vote goes to the x800xl if you are looking for something a little cheaper but has almost the same performance as the higher models.
 
AoE III will use Shader Model 3.0. It is due 11/05. Release date probably will slip a bit.
6600gt should run it fine. 6800gt would run it better. The developers said in an interview that no card currently on the market can take advantage of all the features that will be in the software. But if you must buy a card now because your old card has died, as No Name's has, then why spend $200+ on a card that only has Shader Model 2.0 and be forced to replace it in one year? Or get a 9800xt on ebay, but then as I read too often in forums, you can be dealing with small defects that are time consuming to correct.

Youll still be forced to replace, beccause as ou (Or they) said "No current card can support all the features" an X800XL would be the best choice, fantastic playability on all current games, while not being extra expensive. Then, when the R520 comes out, see if it will support all the new features.

You would spend that to own a video card for a year?
For only $70 more you could get a 6800GT and own it for 2 years. It would be plenty good.
 
I previously had a 9800 XT and upgraded to a 6800 Ultra. This is before I found out about the BFG GT OC can be BIOS flashed to a 6800 Ultra speeds. I have currently flashed my 6800 Ultra to a 6800 Ultra super duper extreme edition speed. No problems since day one with drivers or games.

Your argument is very weak. For the same price you can get everything the ATI cards can do and have room to play future games.

So is yours...I feel like i'm talking to a salesman at BB..."spend more money so you can be more future proof". What i'm hearing is "spending more money now so you will only be half gimped when the 3.0 games come out". If the thread starter actually sees games on the near horizon with SM3.0 that he will actually play then your argument has some merit. But for the love of his wallet the "uber" card isn't the way to go for his requirements.

Match the card to the USER and not to some sort of "generic standard". Look at his processor/memory...the 6800GT doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I play WoW and only WoW. I do not foresee playing any game other than WoW for at least a year. To me 1280x1024 is more than good enough in terms of resolution. Therefore the 6600GT is the perfect match for me. Yes I could have better performance with a 6800GT but it doesn't matter. In his case the 6800NU is probally the best match...but not much higher. Yes he will get more perforrmance with a better card. But why I do I need a Porsche to go pick-up groceries.

In a year or more when I "may" switch games I'll sell my 6600GT for a $100 + the $200 I left in the bank by not buying the 6800GT and get a card that will beat the 6800GT for the $300 I have.

Hell still be forced to, by the time it IS utilised (Like on AOE 3) the current cards wont be able to support all the features, rendering Ultras/XT-PEs not being able to... render all the special features in the games, Also, the Unreal 3 engine and such

Spending alot of money on ANY card right now is stupid, especially with the R520 coming out, as well as whatever Nvidia desides to plop out

WOW I get back from work and see this on my topic. And the reason for getting a 6600gt was to have something to use till I get something better. Like for 8 months or so. But Im not going to get it because it looks like the video game market is kind of in a mid point between some good cards, and some better ones. I will get one of the "Better" cards but not today.

And I think that some of you guys are forgetting that EVERY video card becomes out dated. When I look into buying a computer part, I say I’m only going to spend x amount of dollars. And then I go and see what I can get for that price range. Because there is always a better one and a newer one coming out in 6 months. That's how it always will be. And I will most likely end up spending thousands of dollars on video cards over my lifetime. The key is to just get something that will play the games you have, or maybe plan on getting in a month. NOT 6 months from now. That's just a waist of time and money, because by then there will be a new one out.

Oh and THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING ME!!!!!! THIS SITE ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

And if I still had my 9800xt, I would use that till about this time next year. I like it fast, but Im to cheap to pay that money out. ;)
