Ok guys, I have not been paying much (any at all) attention to intel for a while. My server (Dell SC420) is still running the slow arse Celeron 325. It is my DC and I am _not_ using it for gaming. Since I have it loaded with HDDs it is pretty warm inside. I was wondering if the newer P4s were any cooler than my celery, since I was consdiering to upgrade to a 'real' P4 with HT.

I guess my question is: will a P4-630 be hotter than a Celery 325?

Most likely. To verify for sure, go to Intel's homepage and look up its CPU spec sheets.

LGA775 P4 630 = 84W (SL7Z9 is the only 630) http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/default.asp?CHRID=483
LGA775 Celeron D 325J = 84W (SL7TL/SL7VR are the LGA775 versions) http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/default.asp?CHRID=1035

(click go on either link)

They use the exact same amount of power.

edit: if your only concern is heat, you can get a P4 551 (SL7PZ/SL8J5 Prescott 1MB core with EM64T, 3.4GHz) or P4 650 (SL7Z7, 3.4GHz) since all 3 of those are also 84W processors. P4 551s go on ebay for between $173 and $238 shipped. That's not much more than a 630 on pricewatch or newegg.

thanks for the help, i will see if i cannot get a 551or 650 on the cheap :)
