Looking for a new power-supply...

Right now I have some shitty generic 500w power supply, which stinks up my room with a really warm 'smoky' smell whenever I put a heavy load on my PC, and it's been like this for months now. So I was thinking, after I should include a new PSU in my next upgrade, if everything goes planned, I will have...

Sapphire x1800 XT 512MB
Pentium D 805 @ 3.6 GHz
ASUS P5LD2-Deluxe
1024MB DDR2 Kingston
1 x 160GB SATA Western-Digital 7200 RPM
1 x DVD-R/W

So, what power-supply should I be looking at getting? I don't want to spend too much, since I don't make an awful lot of money, and I'm kind of want to upgrade urgently.

Umm considering your rig: It is not on par with current consumption demands of systems with more drives and video cards, but your cpu is not as efficient as newer ones. Then you have to consider budget, and also maybe future upgrades. Considering your sysem, I think a Corsair 620 would be great. It is effecient, reliable, and pretty cheap. Oh, [H] did a review on it too.

I have an Enermax Liberty and love it, but you would be hard pressed to vote against the Corsair. In the 500W -700W range, Mushkin, Seasonic, Enermax, OCZ, and Silverstone standout too. If you whittle it down, I would consider the 700W OCZ Powerstream (I think that is the name), Enermax Liberty 620W, or Corsair 620W. It may be too much for your needs though as far as wattage is concerned. The OCZ is a unit I have heard nothing but raves about and can be had for like $100 whereas the other two go for around $140-$150.

Good luck, and let us know your choice.

Corsair 620HX, FTW!!

Best power supply I've ever owned. Stable and so quiet, I thought it wasn't working at first. You might be able to throw the 520W model at it if you need to go cheaper.

if you got the funds for it, Corsair HX620.

if your on a budget, OCZ GameXStream 600w or 700w.

your gonna hear people saying the OCZ GXS psu's have ripple, which is true but like jonnyGURU said in his review, majority of systems out there will never see that much power consumption over a long period of time to have it effect you. its still a great psu. i've had mine since the series was introduced and love it. if you plan to get R600 or want to run dual 8800GTXs + quadcore, your better off with the HX620.

Silencer 470 ATX@40C $100, x1800xt @ ~10amps 12V
should be more than you need. Won't do SLI but with your D@215W max and the gpu at 110 You'll have some headroom for extra drives if you want.

You'd do fine with the Silverstone Olympia 650.

The GXS has the ripple, as mentioned above by aiya. You're not likely to see it since most pc's don't draw a lot of power, but I'd rather buy a piece of mind and get something without.
