Can someone explain to me the difference between Intel Pentium N3540 and Intel Core i5 5200U to see what would be best for my needs?

Laptop is for a family member who will be doing a little bit of everything on it - will let his kid (teenager) do homework on it, do some netflix and maybe a little bit of work comprising of outlook/excel.

That sums it up. Bay Trail based CPUs are low power slugs and are suitable for basic internet use, email and not much else. The latest 5th Gen U CPUs are WAY better.
