Doing some rearranging in the home office and I'm tired of running multiple printers. I currently have a Brother HL-2270DW laser that has been very reliable for the last couple years (and cheap toners ;) ) and a Lexmark All-in-one color inkjet which hasn't been as reliable.. and the cartridges suck.

After some debate.. we really don't use the color printing except maybe once every couple months.. so we could either print color at a print shop or I could do it from work.. so I can't justify needing it at home. However, the wife really wants the scanning/copying, but hates having to do it on the computer connected to the Lexmark via USB.. so she wants to either scan to network, or at least be able to use the printer's software to scan to her laptop and then move the file to the network.

With that said, I'm looking for a good, but reasonably cheap, replacement that will handle both tasks and was curious if anyone had suggestions? I'm leaning towards the Brother DCP-L2540DW since we've been happy with our Brother printer, the toners are pretty cheap, and it's only $130 on Amazon. Anyone use one of these or have any other suggestions? The key needs are printing and scanning via network (scanning either to a network share or a remote system with the printer software installed). Fax isn't really needed (thinking about dropping our land line anyways) and color printing isn't needed, though color scanning is.

You get what you pay for, it'll probably work decent but don't expect "good" quality and speed is going to be on the slow side.

well.. not exactly sure what this means :p We paid only $70 for the Brother HL-2270DW which we've had for 2 years now and have gone through about 4 high yield toners while still on the original fuser. Absolutely no issues with the printer (knock on wood), which is why I was looking at Brother multi-function lasers. Our current printer does up to 27 ppm, and the DCP-L2540DW is rated at up to 30 ppm.. so about the same, which is fine for home use.

Do you have a better suggestion for a home multi-function printer?

I'll be picking up a Canon Pixma MG7550 later today, I'll be able to report on it in a few days.

This.. Picked up a $130 special color laser quite a while ago that's now basically unusable due to horizontal streaks. (still have about half the starter cartridges left)

vs. the $300 or so I spent on the Samsung B&W multifunction that's still working great to this day. (wanted something with a sheetfeed scanner and auto duplexing)

Yeah.. I don't think I would touch a color laser multi-function for under $200 if I needed color. However, with just needing black/white printing, I would think that for around $150 I should get something fairly dependable... if my $70 printer is any sign. Sure... it isn't HP business laserjet quality... but we are talking about home use here, not 2000+ pages per month.

Honestly, if the 2270DW is meeting your printing needs, yeah, the L2540DW (or one of it's current 2700-series successors) should be perfectly okay for you.
