I'm in the market for a microphone Basic requirements:

- Connects via USB
- Works well with GNU/Linux (i.e. just plug it in and it works)
- Ideal for Skype/Discord/Teamspeak/Mumble
- Decent brand and/or build quality

I've never purchased one of these before, so if anyone can identify any specific things I should look out for, it would be appreciated. For example, noise cancellation sounds useful, but how well does it actually work?

Many thanks. :)

I'm using a Blue Snowball, but I wouldn't recommend it on account of its size and that it occasionally just stops working and needs replugging- which has worked every time so far. Also don't know if it works for Linux, though it is driverless in Windows.

They do make smaller ones and audio quality is outstanding- the biggest issues are that they're sensitive to distance and that there's no noise cancellation.

I tried so many mics but hated that none but headset ones followed by movement. Using large monitors like I did I found my movement did create some level differences in my audio.

Many thanks for the replies. :) I'm using a 24" Dell UltraSharp 1080p monitor, so my head movement won't be that great. In terms of distance, what's the max distance they can be used at?

It depends if you're looking for a desktop mic or a headset mic. If the latter, look into modmic.

It'll be a desktop mic. :) I'm currently leaning towards the Blue Yeti Nano, the full fat Yeti is a little too fat... :p

I loved the aesthetic of the AT-2020's when i used them. Yeti's just didn't win me over, but maybe cause I was being stubborn :)
