Okay, windows media center is unstable for me, not only does it not play all the formats, and it is also prone to frezes, and crashes.

i have VLC that I love. (though I have to keep switch the audio output every time it opens a new file). What I would liek is a program that lets me navigate "like" WMC, but plays stuff in VLC.

Does anything like this exist?
 
Sounds like you just need to configure Media Center correctly. What version of Windows?
 
I use win7.

It is good in that when it does play, it work well, and the sound output is always what I would deem "correct" (dts/dd). VLC defaults annoyingly to PCM.

My problem with WMC is that a lot of the formats I get don't show up in media center, and I often get some message about incompatible format, or folder empty. Vlc just seems to work every time.

Additionally, It crashes a lot, it crashes at start up, and then sometimes when I try to load movies it locks up.

I use a slightly old 1080i projection TV, and the RGB are slightly misaligned, as well as other issues it makes it hard to read text on the screen. So it is very hard to use windows explorer. This is one large benefit for MWC the lettering and icon are HUGE and I like this very much. there are other issues with this TV/reciever/computer combo, (I get corrupted video very often), but this is a different issue, and unlikely to be resolved anytime soon.

I use the "shark" codec packs.

I set it all up with one of the guides, I think it was on the AVS forum.

Should I try the XBMC thing?
 
Media Browser or MyMovies are two popular media library add-on's for MCE that will get all of your titles to display properly along with info and cover art (MCE's built in movie management system is jacked up from the start and neutered to top it off). It sounds like you have some codec and/or media player issues that is the root of the problem though, so it would be worth it to fix those first. What formats are you working with and have you noticed any specific causes? Ex. - Playing an MKV causes MCE to crash, while playing an XVID causes corrupted video.
 
XBMC is pretty good +1 (actually a modded xbox 1 is what got me into the whole htpc thing), I tried media center with media browser, while cool it leaves a little to be desired in actually playing the proper audio format and subtitles consistently. But hey try them all out like 95% of everything is free, well unless you need bluray decoding too.
 
My computer does not cooperate when I use MyMovies on my Xbox360 with ISO files. They seem to refuse to play, Xbox gives me an error, but they do mount automatically, so I'm not real sure.

I believe you need the "Premium account" these days to get ISO's to work with My Movies. I'm out of the loop when it comes to MyMovies though, I lost interest when they started limiting certain features to the premium account holders. Not that I have any problem with paying for software, but I think they wanted something like $50, which is completely ridiculous for that piece of software.
 
MCE & My Movies is what I use - MM can be a little clunky at first, but once you figure it out, it works perfectly.
 
Totally agree on XBMC. A couple of other options would be Boxee and Mediaportal.
