ok i guess an LCD monitor falls under "gaming equipment" so i thought i would ask here what a good gaming LCD is, im building a badass new gaming system but i have never used an LCD monitor before so i have no idea what i should get,

i want a LCD monitor for a hardcore gamer and can do 1600x1200 in desktop mode,

what LCD monitor do YOU use and what should i be looking at?

I have heard that LCD's suck for games but I have no experience gaming with them. We have a couple 19" Viewsonic LCDs at work and they last about 6 months tops. My hospital just keeps buying more of the same...

FWIW, heres where I buy monitors. http://www.accurateit.com/

I just got my Brother in Law a 21" Trinitron for $208 shipped and the picture is absolutely gorgeous. Can't beat a flat screen 21" CRT for gaming! Big and heavy yes, but you should see Battlefield Vietnam in 1600/1200 on a big wall of glass.

That site is amazingly cheap... There's 22" monitors that can do 1600 x 1200 at 85 hz for 129.00.. mistubishi monitors

I use a Benq fp937S. No noticeable ghosting and a nice crisp picture. Only problem for you is it doesn't do 1600x1200 native.

They are good prices, but the monitors that cheap are refurbs. Nothing wrong with refurbished, but you really need to check the details on that site. I've had mixed results with refurbs, but mostly good reults. I guess for that cheap, you can deal with the occasional crap monitor. ;)

Dell 2001FP...it's around $550 with a reoccuring coupon...

DVI 1600x1200...works like a dream

I use an Eizo L550, 17", which set me back about $450. (It's probably cheaper now, and even cheaper in the US.)
I haven't had a single problem gaming with it. It's truly great.

It's 17" and 1280x960 native, so you'll want one of their larger, more expensive ones for 1600x1200.

All refurbs have 6 month warranties :D

Thats a pretty nice site.. Bookmarked :D

oh man i hope they ship to canada :0

I have a NEC 1760V-BK, and it's absolutely perfect in gaming and everything else, no ghosting at all!

I also used to use a Nokia 445xi 21" CRT...it weighted like 80Lbs but it looked great...and I bought that refurb for less than $175 shipped a few years ago

I have a viewsonic vp201b its 20.1 inches 16ms and its native resolution is 1600x1200....its great no ghosting great for games it has dvi and vga i got mine awile ago i payed 900 or so now u can get them for 700 or so :D

I will second the dell 2001FP, just got one and it is great, no noticeable ghosting in any games I have played.

It also has a built in 4 port USB hub...Picture in Picture feature and RCA video in as well...

If I need to work on someone elses machine I just slap it up on my desk and use picture in picture...so if i have to run a virus scan or some crap I can play games on mine :-Þ

Another big things include: it's height adjustable...can also pivot 90 degrees clockwise...can tilt forward and back

The wire management hook/loop leaves something to be desired but it gets the job done

Yet another vote for the 2001FP. Great monitor. Only bad thing I've noticed is the screen door effect while looking at white/bright pictures. Awesome for gaming tho. 1600x1200 rules!

I have had a 19" Samsung LCD for two and a half years. I use it 10+ hours a day. They do not die after 6 months.

i still want to be able to play games at resulution lower than 1600x1200 since that still taxes some systems

Thats fine, I run my games at a lower resolution in a window (partially because I'm using two monitors). still looks awesome and not quite as taxing.

samsung 712N or 710N... No difference between the two, but HIGHly recommended. I went from an extremely high quality CRT 21" to this and I have to say I love the change. Screen is crisp, bright, and fluid. No ghosting. No smearing. It looks phenomenal. Highly recommended

I have a SamSung SyncMaster 997DF Monitor and It's pretty nice. read some reviews on it, there pretty positive ones. plus it was only around 200 bucks for 19".

I absolutely love my Viewsonic VG191 for gaming. Best monitor I have ever had. Lots of good reviews around, although, it was a little pricy; but well worth the price of admission :)

You cannot go wrong with a Viewsonic.

The only benefit to an LCD monitor is size. If you want the best image quality and proper color levels, then a CRT is the way to go.

I agree on the 997DF, very nice monitor for a kickass price.

The new Hyundai L90D+ 8ms 700:1 300candle is the best LCD I have even had, and it being compared to some of the $600-1000 lcds

yup i just orderd mine today :D

Same here. I just ordered mine as well. Hyundai appears to have a major hit on their hands, judging by how many people are talking about it, and how fast it's selling out at any place that has it.

Lowest price ever. Dell Home has their Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 20.1" 1600x1200 Digital LCD for:

$749
- 25% off coupon code 40F961WD2MTG0K [Exp 2/24, 5:59am, 2000 uses]
- $55 off $475 Electronics and Accessories code 14?J2KVM?N8J21 [Exp 2/18, 5:59am CST, 2000 uses]

= $507 shipped.

In case you wanted to cancel your order on the other one. :)

1280X1024 is a solid gaming resolution. It's big enough to give lots of details, but without making text so tiny that it's unreadable. It's also a "standard" resolution pretty much every game offers.
Finally, some of the larger resolutions are so big that unless you're on a SCREAMING system you'll have to turn details down to play them. 1280X1024 is pretty much the final frontier for playing with details cranked on most systems.

I have used 1280x1024 in games for years and I see no reason to go higher. You hardly notice a difference and it just strains the video a lot of you jump to 16x12.
