I'm planning to put an Accelero S1 on my XFX 9800GT, and I'm looking for a fan to put on it. Something similar to Ordovician's 8800GT. I have lots of criteria for this fan, and haven't really found anything that fits the bill yet. Hopefully the experts here can at least get me pointed in the right direction.

  • I'd like to do a slow/quiet 92mm or 120mm. For reference, I have half a dozen of the low speed Yate Loon 120's in my CM690. Anything around that noise level would be great.
  • I'd like it to be a PWM fan. The fan on the stock cooler seems to draw quite a bit of power (based on spec sticker) compared to the specs I've seen for PWM 92's and and 120's. This would allow the video card to remain a single unit rather than plugging into the motherboard, as well as allowing the video BIOS to adjust the fan speed if needed.
  • I'd like for it to be a thinner fan if possible. From other installs I've seen, the whole assembly seems to run into a fourth slot with a regular 120mm case fan installed (1 for the card, 1 for the Accelero, and 1+ for the fan).   • I'd prefer a plain black fan, but I'm not that picky as long as it's not completely tacky or blinged out.

If anyone knows for sure that a regular 20-25mm case fan won't run into the fourth slot, then the thickness requirement isn't necessary. I've got two empty 1x slots below the 9800GT, but I'd rather not have the fans scraping components off the back of the old 8600GT in the second 16x slot. =)
 
I am not sure the Noctua will meet the thikness criteria, but I had a 120mm on my S1 and it was great.

Kept nicely cooled and the think is very quiet.

I'm not sure. I don't have the Accelero yet, so I haven't done any fitment myself. I'm just going by other people's pictures posted around. Unfortunately, a lot of them are at angles where it's hard to see exactly how far down it extends. I was hoping someone else might be able to say for sure how well a regular fan would fit there, or just link me to a thin version of a nice PWM fan so I wouldn't even have to worry about it.

I was originally hoping to order the Accelero and a fan together, but I'd pretty much decided to just get the Accelero and run it passive (2x 120's on the side panel blowing right on it anyway) while I figured out what the best fan would be. However, my brain just turned on and I realized the stock fan off my CPU is a thin PWM fan. It's a little loud and only 70mm, but it should help me figure out what will work on the Accelero.
 
I'm going to try getting a Scythe SY1012SL12H(PWM) without buying a whole Shuriken. It's a 100x100x12 PWM fan, and pretty quiet from what I've read.

EBM makes the highest quality fans, you do pay a premium for them, but PAPST owners know the difference. Once you have them, you never go back.

Oh, if you buy the Shuriken heatsink, just for the fan, I will probably buy the heatsink alone from you. I am looking fo some low profile heatsinks like that one, which I can strap a 165cfm S-FORCE EBM Papst 92mm fan on it :D
