I am looking for a dslr. Upgrading from my S3 IS.

I would like price to be around 500.

I have to go right now, but will add what I am really looking for later.
Just throw random ideas out there.

Thanks
Bob

Nikon D40
Pentax K100D
Olympus E-500

all are in that price range including kit lens.

I'd either get a Nikon D40 or a Canon XT. I think the XTis are to high above your price range unless you just get the body.

I don't like the e-500 by olympus, because the menus are confusing, but the e-300 is really nice.

If you have any friends with DSLR's, get the same brand as them so you can use their lenses and accessories.
Most of my friends and colleagues use Canon so I can use their lenses and flashes if they aren't using them.
the only lenses I can't use are the EF-S lenses as my D60 and 10D don't support them.

Thanks for the opinions you guys.
If I have any more questions I'll get back to you

Thanks
Bob
