Any certain Dremel I should get? Or would any do?


Specifically, I would like to ask for dremel that comes with a kit. The full use of a dremel in this case would be for casemods and teh like.

In short: What Dremel should I ask for as a gift of Christmas from family?

I have one for sale if you want it, its not a dremel brand dremel, but it does the job and im selling it cheap. Its mains powered, the wire is a little short, but you can fix that easy. It is 8000-30000rpm so its fast enough. I kinda cut holes and melted bits of the case, so dont expect to get it with it. It came with a huge selection of tool bits, so I will include them. I will send it to you in a cushioned cardboard box. Im not expecting a lot, Id be happy with around £15-20, even though I bought it for £36
 
Don't crap on the thread.

Go to Dremel's site and look at the MultiPro tools. It has the product numbers and whatnot, so you can find the kit you'd get the most use out of. That series is tried and true.

I haven't ever used the XPR so I can't comment on it, but it looks rather nice as well.

I asked for Dremel information, and not for information on buying some British guys offbrand machine :)

I saw those XPR's and was trying to figure out, whats the better choice, is the MultiPro the one thats been around for ever and made the Dremel brand?

Then you try to sell him an offbrand dremel when you suggest a brand name dremel. That's ummm contradicting yourself. Odd.
 
Whats wrong with suggesting him to get a dremel brand dremel, there are tonnes of other brand dremels out there. I plan to get a Dremel brand dremel myself once I sell the one I was offering to him, and whats wrong with offering him an non brand dremel at a good price, if he is getting his first dremel.
 
I own a Dremel Multipro Model 395, myself. It varies in speed from 5,000-30,000rpm. One tip. Do not buy a cordless model. They're much more limited in function. Do buy a variable speed model, not the 2-speed one. What model you buy from there depends on what you want to do with the unit. If it's case modding, you may or may not need their brand new 400XPR system on their website, though it certainly looks cool. You may however want the Flexshaft attachment, which slows it down a little, but really helps for cutting in tight places. It made doing the blowhole in my case a lot easier.
 
Do you know if the XPRs are more powerful that 395s. I will be getting one of either in a month or two.

from home depot, $99.00 and it comes with a very good amount of Accessories and it also comes with the Flex shalf and the Circle /hole cutter attachment. If you want you can even buy the 220 piece set for $29.00 on sale from $35.00.

And I must say, it cut through 1/16" Aluminum sheet like it was butter.
 
If you want a more versatile tool, go with the Rotozip. It allows use of the 3/8 bits, which allows use of those large cutting wheels (about 4inches in diameter) and routing bits/etc. Costs about the same. It's bigger, but the added size makes up for the versatility for the all around stuff.

The RotoZip is a great tool, but isn't designed for precision work. A dremel may not have as much power, but it's small, light, and easy to maneuver. I recommend any of the new Dremel XPR's, but just about any dremel would do. Just make sure it has adjustable speed. I've tried to use my mom's old one with only the on/off switch and it's horrible.
 
that new xpr400 is very nice, I especially like the new style case, but the only problem is that the standard attachments do not work with it, it needs its own special attachments which I think was stupid on dremel's part. The model before it you can pick up parts locally at home depot, sears, lowes, anyplace
 
Get a Dremel brand Dremel....You can get them from Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc...
 
Let's see, I myself got a 400 XPR, the one for ~$79. It has the same price at Walmart, HomeDepot, Sears... It is actually cheaper to buy the other accessories (hole maker, planner, saw) separatedly

I went for the 400 because it has a little bit more power, 2 amps vs 1.4 in the normal Dremel. And because of the saw atachment (I now think it would have been beter to buy a separate tool for the saw, the Dremel attachment is not very easy to handle while cutting)
As for the extra bits... I think they are mostly useless (then again i am not an expert modder). You will use plenty of cutting disks, but if you want to cut a steel case in detail, you will need an HARDENED "engraving" bit. All the other bits for drilling, sanding and stuff meant for wood and drywall.. not entirely useful.

If it is a chrismas present, go for the 400 XPR but if money is tight go for the Black & Decker brand, which has the 2.0 Amp motor and costs much less (~$35) and is B&D so it is not a cheap knock off and can use the same bits.

Oh, and that "pencil" attachment is great for tight spaces. If you could attach that to a Roto-zip or other big motor (and big AMP) power tool, you would be set.

They make a Carbide Bit for cutting Metal's well there is two types, each with different cutting length head, I saw it at home depot for $7.00

Umm this maybe a Dumb Question but have you looked to see if by some crazy chance there is a Home Depot in the UK, or something close to it maybe ?
Or you can try going to the Dremel web site and check to see how you could geet one.
 
I have a 770 cordless model, and I can truthfully say that it sucks. So, don't make the same mistake I did.

Did you research anything before you said it? No? Then shut up. Go to www.google.co.uk, search web pages from UK (so only UK dealers), and how many results are there for 'dremel 400 xpr'? 27... and no UK dealers.

NO! i did do a google search, why should I? your the one who needs to get or wants a dremel, and Ya know I tried to give the best info and or advise I could, maye you should take a min to read what was posted and take for whats it worth, someone that tried to help,, but i guess being a N00Bie neans more than just N00B to moding, try learning to read what posted before Spewing out trash.
