Yep, I'm pretty much deciding to go full-nerd-ahead and place a giant silkscreen in my livingroom for my pc. Thing is I have no clue what projectors are good, what's not etc.

I'm trying to get something that is at least on par with a typical 19" LCD display, native res 1280x1024. So basically the projector should be able to pull off 1280x1024.

Now I noticed the varying native vs max res...and am wondering how decent these larger "max" resolutions are, does max res have significant distortion, etc?

Go over to projectorpeople.com and give them a call. They should be more than happy to give you advice, if not also hook you up.

basically go with the new DLP technology
tiny projectors with HUGE lumen counts
look for somthing in the 1750lumens and up range

in focus is an excellent brand
and cant go wrong here
fantastic stuff

Not sure if that’s your opinion or not but in the Home Theater industry In Focus is the biggest joke going.

It’s a price product period, best used for Power Point presentations. Worst color ramp performance I have ever seen, worst black levels I have ever seen and horrible geometry problems. It’s become Office Max’s big discount line.

As for FP over all, you need a dark room, you do need a screen for proper performance and if you get one worth having it’s a hell of an investment. Cost of ownership is a pain as well, about 2000 hours bulb life with a minimum of 250 or more per bulb and that’s for a cheap unit. Your better projectors can have bulbs running 600 to more then a grand.

Ok, that’s the bad stuff.

If you can put up with everything you need to do to make one work and have the proper room they are a beautiful thing. In the under 5k region I’d suggest a good LCD, over 5 DLP starts to come into it’s own.

The other side of this multisided coin is, if you get to see a really good CRT FP unit you won’t even consider DLP or LCD. Page back a few months in this forum, there are a number of posts about this with pictures..prepare to be shocked.

What ever you decide to do go shopping first and see some in action. ;)
