Well I want to replace my downstairs imac which is like 5 years old, with a PC made from spare parts. I don't want to spend much on it, and I don't want to use one of my CRT's. Looking for a small LCD, 17 inch sounds good. Possibly 15" if it will be much cheaper...

I'm just wondering where I should get it from.. on Newegg I see some 17" monitors for around $150. My question is, is this a good deal for a 17" LCD? Will prices be going down anytime soon? Are there better places to shop for small LCDs?

edit: This computer will be used mostly for internet browsing, printing files and playing shared music from other computers throughout the house. So no need for low refresh rates... DVI would be nice but not necessary. Image quality does not matter too much.

Ching, if you simply want a lo-price LCD with no fancy Specs----- you're all set, no need for hassle of online shopping.
Simply go local store like CompUSA or Best Buy or Staples or Office Max and look at the 15" screens and grab the one with the brightest, nicest looking display.
They're prolly all hooked to same screensaver, so the better one will look a little brighter, little sharper, more colorful-----in other words, just plain "nicer".
They'll all be cheap price, too, Ditto if you want a 17".
Good luck:)

Thanks for the suggestion.

I actually work at CompUSA, so I could check out the displays tomorrow... but it looks like the cheapest ones would be $130 for 15", or $170 for 17" plus 6% tax. Employee discount will not be much, so it still might just be cheaper to buy one online. I dunno.

also I think I remember reading somewhere that LCD's will be a lot cheaper sometime soon (read that a couple months ago). Think this is true?

Blue Falcon, I will definately consider that. But if I can get a smaller LCD for around $100, I think that would be a better choice. I would rarely even use this computer anyway. I just want an LCD so it uses less energy, and does not take up much desk space (right now we've got an old iMac with the CRT and it is annoying).

They have already gotten cheaper and I doubt the prices will dip all that much lower until some of the newer technologies hit the retail market, so I'd go ahead and buy now.

The very cheapest 17" LCD you can buy is going to be around $145 + shipping, and that's for some no-name stuff. $15" LCDs are only around $10 cheaper and again that's no-name stuff.

I would still urge you to get a 19" minimum... even if it's being used on a secondary 'work' PC or whatever the desktop real estate is nice, and 19" is going to be the sweet spot as far as value goes. Plus you never know when you might want to use the monitor elsewhere in the future, that 19" is going to be a lot more versatile. :)

Whatever the case I would NOT buy one from CompUSA (or anywhere else brick and mortar) as the prices are going to be pretty inflated unless you get one heck of an employee discount.

Be sure and let us know what you decide on!

Well I did see a 15" LCD for $120 shipped after rebate. It's some rebadged monitor.. I have the 19" version, looks the same but has the name FujiPlus on it (I've seen other names too). I am very satisfied with the one I have. Seems like a decent deal, but it's only 15"...

I probably won't decide for at least another month, I need either a LGA775 board or a s939 processor. I have everything else.. probably just going to look for a deal in FS/FT for either the mobo or the processor.

And I'll have to ask my dad about this, because he'll be using this most. He actually uses photoshop daily at work, and retouches photos he takes on this iMac. So he might be willing to pitch in for a higher quality monitor with better colors, and that probably means 19". Then again he might not be willing to pay extra money since he doesn't do any important photoshop work on the iMac.
