So Im looking for a camera. Im wanting it to last a while, until and if I get a dSLR or a while if not. So lots of shooting modes. I've been thinking I want to get the A510 or A520. Lots of control, SD (1x1Gb card + 1x512MB card already). But they use the DIGIC 1 processor. Whats the benefits of the DIGIC 2?

Looking though the digitalcamerareview.com review of the SD400, it can record video until the card is full, but cant adjust zoom while recording. Side use of camera besides general use, would be recording 1/4 mile passes, so zoom while recording would be a big deal. :(

What would everybody recomend? $250-$300 is spending range.

Are you wanting this for video or photo use? Sounds to me like you are wanting to do video. First off... your not going to get very good video quality on a photo camera. Likewise, photos aren't that great from a video camera. Also, most cameras in that price range will not allow you to zoom while recording video.

So, decide whats more important to you.. photos or videos. If its photos, go with the Canon a95. $299, and excellent reviews. I use the a80 as backup and just bought an a95 for the father-in-law. It has 5mp, and excellent sharp photos. The movie feature is on par with the rest of the cameras in that price range. Again, your not going to find that zoom feature or get excellent movies out of them.

If videos are more your thing, its going to cost you about twice your budget to get a nice miniDV camcorder. Canon also has an excellent line of these as well.

Looking for a still camera, not a miniDV. Just annoying that they cant zoom. That really sucks. Get the launch or get the final time...doubt you could fit both in the same zoom level...

Again whats the benefits of D2 over D1 processors?

Here's Canon's response:

The newly developed image processor, DIGIC II considerably shortened startup time, AF speed and playback speed, and achieved comfortable camera operation. Also, speeding up the processing speed greatly contributes towards higher image quality improving exposure accuracy and white balance, and conducting noiseless processing.

Canon has created a “Photographic Space” that relates the peripheral brightness and the distance between camera and subject according to the zoom position of the lens when taking a picture. By utilizing the “Photographic Space” data, this camera realizes faster and more precise AF, AE and Auto White Balance (AWB) than ever before.

After googling and reading some more... basically the biggest thing DIGIC 2 has over the origional is speed. In addition, it allows for slightly more accurate auto focus, auto white balance, etc. I believe DIGIC 2 also allows you to record video until the whole card is filled up. Unlike the origional which caps out at about 3 minutes. That last part about the video I'm not 100% positive about, so don't quote me.

Good luck on your camera purchase! My vote still goes for the a95!

Is there no A95 : A75 :: ? : A510?
(A95 is to the A75 what the [unknown] is to the A510)
