Hello again everyone. I have a build going on for a NUS server (over at OCN -- http://www.overclock.net/t/1272033/nus-server-and-mdc-build-log) and in essence it is in a 4224 chassis, and will have 4 Hitachi 15K600 600GB SAS drives in Raid 5 for 15-25 Hyper-V VMs, and am starting a Raid 60 array with 3TB 7200RPM drives, to expand through the remaining 20 drive bays when needed.

I am trying to finalize my backup plan, and have a few questions...or opinions rather. First off, I want to say that I plan to have an off-site backup using CrashPlan. Will take a while for the initial sync, but will be worth it in the long run. I also want to do on-site backups of important data (photos, personal docs, etc.) as well as what I call semi-critical data (music, ringtones, and the like). I don't plan to do a local backup of my movies/TV Shows, which will be the majority of my storage...and will only have off-site for that.

I am trying to decide how I want to do my on-site storage. I know that I am going to use System Center 2012 Data Protection Manager (DPM) to do a weekly offline backup of all my VMs (will have a 2 node Hyper-V cluster...and yes, this is all at home for a non-business). DPM won't backup to a removable device (flash drive, USB HDD, etc) so I am trying to decide the best alternative. The motherboard in my NUS server has 3 PCI slots, 2 PCI-e x8 slots, and a PCI-e x1 slot. I will be using a LSI MegaRAID 9261-8i controller, with a HP SAS Expander...so the x8 slots will be used. I am debating on using the x1 slot to add a x2 eSATA card, and use an external DAS device like this:

In which I would load up with 8 4TB drives, in a Raid 10...for 16TB of backups. DPM will also be doing dedup backups of my critical and semi-critical data, to this device...nightly.

My other option would be to use a NAS device (QNAP or Synology or something) and do the same thing, just over my LAN. My NUS has 4 gigabit NICs, that will be using iSCSI with MPIO for my VM Hosts, so network traffic shouldn't be bothered...especially at 2am daily.

When I am looking at a eSATA DAS, the Rosewill is what I came across tonight when I pulled up Newegg, and am not limited to that brand. I am looking for quality, but still somewhat cheap...since I am already dishing out a lot of cash for my NUS. My NUS, firewall, Hyper-V host, switches, UPS, and any local backup device will be rack mounted in a dedicated room, that I am planning to build in my garage...so I don't want to deal with swapping out drives or anything like that. Ideally, I want a DAS/NAS device that I can set to spin down when not in use, to conserve wear on the drives. Using a Raid 60 for my main storage, I am hoping I won't have to worry about backups...but better safe than sorry.

Anyone got any other recommendations?
 
Before I start to make suggestions, separate from the main box what is your budget for the backup equipment?
 
Eh, I don't want to say that I have a strict budget...because I don't. I would like to spend no more than $350-400 on a backup solution, not including the cost of 4-8 3-4TB drives.
 
RAID10 for a backup seems a waste, why not use RAID6 and spend less on the drives ?

Using raid IN your backup is totally different then using raid AS your backup.
 
RAID is not a backup, period.

Try reading my first post, in it's entirety. I am am using a raid system, to back up another raid system. The infamous line "raid is not a backup, blah blah" is saying that don't expect your files to be safe just because you are running raid. Raid is not my backup solution, as my backup solution is an offsite full backup, as well as a on-site backup of critical and semi-critical data. The backup subsystem will run raid of some sort, either separate raid 1s or a raid 10.

Raid 6 and raid 10 both require a minimum of 4 drives. In a 4 drive array, when talking about backups...I'd rather have the raid 10 over raid 6, and not have to worry about parity calculations. I also did not want to use a parity style raid for my backup solution. Raid 10, or Raid 1 pairs.
