I want to connect my old 24” Dell monitor to my laptop. The laptop has a Mini HDMI 1.4 port. My old Dell 24” monitor only has a DVI vga connector. Does anyone have a thought on this? When I do a search and it only comes up with a big HDMI connector.

Micro are really small, like 1/8" across iirc. Mini is about 1/2". Standard is about 3/4" I guess.

Micro is usually used for video recorders, if they don't use firewire.

These guys used to have a B&M across the street from my office at InHell (before I retired), used to be called PCH cables. Mail order only now, but no one and I mean NO ONE I've ever found has more cables in stock then these guys. Shopped there a bunch of times, over the years. Nice folks, very easy to recommend:

I’m back. Tired of fifty million different cables. So I bought a mini hdmi to dvi female cable it does not fit. So a micro is to small. A mini seems to be to small. And a standard is to big. What is going on the wrong sizing of cables. It aiways seems these asian companies screwing everything up.

Sorry for rant tired of garbage crap out there.

this one? 'cause thats just a regular hdmi port. if the monitor isnt analog only, this should work: https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Basics-Adapter-Cable-1-Pack/dp/B014I8UQJY

The standard is 3/4” wide. Is to wide. I mesured the port and inside width is 9/16” the cable hdmi end I have measures a hair over 6/16”

idk where that 3/4 came from ("i guess") but thats wrong. have you bothered to try a normal cable?

From me probably. I was estimating before, definitely don't trust my numbers blindly -- they're almost certainly wrong, i'm only unsure by how much.

idk what it is either, but its not 3/4 on my ruler, but my work lenovo has a standard hdmi port.

So I will try the Standard HDMI male to DVI Female. So how do they list them? A lot just say HDMI but not Micro, Mini or Standard.

And thank you for the help.

Typically I'd get a 6ft (or whatever) male HDMI to male DVI cable, and then you don't need to have both an adapter and a cable.

Dvi male to HDMI female one piece adapters are pretty common too. Screw onto the dvi device, then use an HDMI male to male cable between the HDMI device and the adapter.

I see the other way, where it's HDMI male to DVI female, but they look more awkward.

All of these can be passive, in which case they'll work bidectionally and let you switch between single link DVI and HDMI in almost all applications. If you need high resolution/high frame rate (probably not on a 24"), the dvi part needs to be dual link and you need active adapters that usually only go one way.

The monitor I’m using has a male dvi plug. So you need a female dvi to connect. As you no male doesn’t plug into male. The laptop accepts a male hdmi. This is why I need a male hdmi to a female dvi. Don’t need a 6 foot cable. Laptop sits right in front of the monitor.

monitors always have the female end, the cable will be male to male. i already posted an amazon link to what you need to try.

Also if you are ever in doubt, you can use your phone to take photos of a connector and use that as a search on google.

And post the monitor model number can help. I am sure it isn't doing anything different than every other dell monitor in that era.

Male/female refers to the pins in the connector, fwiw, not the connector body. I know, it's confusing sometimes.

How ae you defining male and female dvi plugs? The cable coming out and on the end of the cable is male. You know with the pins visible. Like the one you linked from Amazon.

if it has pins its male, if it has holes its female, just like in nature....
