Looking for a 42in HDTV

Hey everyone, my family and I will soon be in the market for our first HDTV, and we want to do it right. We are thinking about a 42 - 45 inch wide screen TV that is very thin and possibly wall mountable (how thin are DLP's?). We also know that TWC of Manhattan sends out a 1080i signal so we were wondering whether it would be better to get a TV with that as its native resolution or to get one that is either 7720p or 1080p and have it converted.

So basically I'm looking for some suggestions on companies to buy from, what type you suggest (LCD, plasma, DLP) and possibly specific models.

i have a philips 42PF9986/12 and its awsome for games and movies

having my pc hooked up to it works fine also :)
 
If you have a Costco nearby the one I go to has Pioneer and Panasonic's for really good prices. They're about 3000-5000 but they're not the crap that passes for plasma these days. They're true HD none of that EDTV stuff.
 
awsome, thanks for the tips, so does this mean that you guys suggest plasma as opposed to LCD at this size?
 
oh, and the screen that you linked to isn't fully HD. Would this cause a problem?
 
right thought so, ok, so ill narrow my search into true HD plasmas, thanks for the help and any more suggestions are welcome :)
 
well i was looking at big tvs at christmas time and i have known the salesman at my local comet store for years so i spoke at length about this with him. his exact words were "do not buy a plasma". his reason bieng that the extended warranty is more than double that of a dlp, and for a very good reason. they go wrong on a regular basis around the 4/5 year mark. he was a bit kinder about the lcd ones but i ended up buying a 50" sagem digital light projector and it is great. the picture is perfect, the viewing angle isnt bad and it is hd ready. it cannot be wall mounted because it is wider at the bottom, i think it is about 12" deep. it has a pc input which i havnt tried yet. it costs £2000 in the uk plus £230 for the 5 year warranty.
 
ok thanks for the great information and first hand experience. If i had my way we would get a nice DLP but sadly we don't have the space/no one else wants to give up the space so we are getting something that can be wallmounted. So you think that an LCD would be better in the long run then?

I’d agree, you would be hard pressed to do better then sets from either company, especially the Pioneer.

Re the link to the Sony Plasma 1024 X 768 is indeed HD resolution and anything above that has to be converted.

My main caution to any HD buyer is companies like Sony authorize NO Internet sales; it’s in the franchise agreement. Same goes with Pioneer and quite a few others.

If you are going to get your signal “over the air” most of the new Pioneer sets have a built in HD tuner, you just need a good antenna.

i have a friend that owns a toshiba HD set and an acquaintance that has a sony 42" hd set (not sure of model numbers, but they were both recently bought at best buy) They both have the same satellite reciever and the toshiba blows the sony away with any source. I would check the avsforum because they are the a/v snobs :p

they are only projection screens though....which i trust more due to the longer they have been in production...and they are wayyy cheaper.....and i only see plasma/lcd screens as a status symbol.... in my stereotyping eyes at least
 
Ok, awsome, some more recommendatinos for Pioneer and Panasonic, I will definetly check them out.

Regarding the HD resolution:
I thought the resolutions were:
1280 * 720 = 720 (p or i)
1920*1080 = 1080 (p or i)

This would mean that the sony is not true HD. Am I mistaken in this?

You are right here. Sony is NOT ture HD if the resolution is 1024 x 720.

Another question regarding resolution:
If it says that it is something like 1375 (something like that) * 768 this is higher then 720, would there be any picture degredation?
 
What was you're price point again? I'd consider DLP, I know plasma are nice but I'd rather have a nice samsung dlp any day! I know they have the 4th gen out (with pedistal) but they are only 50 or 56 inch. The 3rd gen sets are still in production and they are all tabletop and come in 42 or 46 through 60. Just a thought and my .2

I don't have a solid price point as of yet, still discussing that with the family, but I won't be able to get a DLP because they take up too much space, I need something that can be mounted on a wall (and no projectors)
 
Has anyone here even seen a good EDTV displaying an HD signal? Seriously, sometimes the EDTV propoganda really makes me wonder what online rags you're reading to determine that they will "look like crap". I own both an EDTV Panasonic plasma and a HDTV Panasonic plasma and if you could tell them apart displaying the same signal from 5 feet away I'd give you $5. My point is if price is a concern don't sweat going with an EDTV plasma as long as you'll be viewing from 7-10 feet.

To the OP - go to a tweeter or magnolia or something and check out the 5th gen Panasonic plasma and compare them to the Pioneers - one will jump out at you, they look very different. Decide if having full HD res matters to you then go from there.
 
Tor, go to www.avsforum.com for help on HDTV questions. Alot of these people have no idea what they are talking about.....you might as well ask them about brain surgery. LOL.

I just spent a year and a half researching/viewing CRT, LCD, plasma, DiLA and DLP technologies and ended up with a Panasonic th-50px50u plasma. The Panny ED plasmas are a fine solution to alot of people. I couldn't see the difference at first but if you spend a bit of time with the TVs and an HD signal, the absence of resolution in the EDs is noticeable....to me anyway. Within about 5 feet the screen door effect in EDs pops out at me in the Pannys but at ten feet the images can look very similar. Many who own EDs prefer their rendition of DVDs to that of HDTVs because the EDs resolution is closer to a DVD player (480i/p) than that of a plasma HDTV. I would think Jackie would know more about this since she has both.

Regarding brands, Panasonic and Pioneer are generally considered value leaders. The new Pannys don't have the features and inputs that the Pioneers have but they convey blacks much better. The Pioneer blacks aren't bad for a plasma, just when it is compared to a Panny. Fujitsus have a very good reputation but are much more expensive (and, in fact, use Panny glass). LGs and Samsungs and the myriad of other off brands are not worth the risk or PQ IMO.
