My mother is finally joining the digital age and wants a digital camera to replace her old film one. she likes the cannon powershot SD700 as my uncle had one and she got some hands on use. the cheapest i have found the SD700 for is 220$ish shipped.
should i consider any different camera manufacturers/makes or is the SD700 a very good camera for the money?
thanks.

SD700 all the way.

The Canon Powershots are the best small cameras out there IMO. I have owned a lot of different small cameras and used even more, and nothing compares to the powershots.

If you wanted to save some money, you could go with something like the SD600 or 650 as well. They also take great pictures!

i think i will stick with he powershots DS700 as this camera will be lasting her for many years, and i dont want to scare her away from digital with a crappy camera.

i heard that the IS(image stabilization) is essential with small cameras like this.
im wondering if there is a newer version of the SD700 out as it is a year or 2 old. maybe its more expensive because they do not make them any more?

the cannon SD750 is avalible at walmart for 225$, whereas the SD700 is online for 250+ shipping.
is the 700 better than the 750? the 750 is 1 megapixle more, and other than that look to be the same.

Really they are all very good cameras. MP does not matter much once you get to a certain point and they all take very good pictures. IS is not necessary, but it is very nice to have. I have a SD700 IS and it is awesome. The 750 is actually worse as it does not have IS.

I can tell you most of the SD power shots 600 + all take very similar good pictures. The IS cameras past the SD700 are now:

SD800IS
SD850IS
SD870IS
SD950IS

They keep coming out with models all the time, but there is not a huge difference. For instance my aunt has the SD850IS and it has a few minor differences, but takes pretty much the same quality shots as my 700IS. 6mp as in the 700IS is plenty for taking normal shots and printing up to 8x10 or so. and it is fine to print bigger every now and then if necessary.

Here is a side by side of all the SD powershot IS cameras:

IS does greatly improve your good shots though, so i would go for one of those SD IS cameras. You can see the differences in the comparison (notice there is nothing really too major).

just talked this over with my father and he also wants to help pay for this gift.

Both are good cameras, here is a side by side comparison:

The SD950 will be lighter and smaller with a few more MP while the sx100 will be larger but have more zoom.
